Probiotic administration is associated with the enhancement of host resistance to environmental and nutritional stressors, improving survival and growth rates. This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus cereus toyoi on growth performance, innate immune responses and gut morphology of two trout species feeding a commercial diet high in soybean meal. A commercial probiotic (4.2 9 10 9 CFU g À1 of additive) was supplemented to the experimental diets at 0% (control), 0.03% (P 1 ; 6 9 10 3 CFU g À1 of diet) or 0.06% (P 2 ; 1.5 9 10 6 CFU g À1 of diet) and fed to brown trout (Salmo trutta) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) for 9 and 20 weeks respectively. Rainbow trout showed significantly better growth performance than brown trout, regardless of the dietary treatment. No effect of dietary probiotic supplementation was detected on growth performance, body composition or innate immune parameters (plasma lysozyme, alternative complement and peroxidase activities). In both species, after 9 weeks, intestinal lamina propria and submucosa were widened, with increased presence of inflammatory cells, significantly higher in groups fed probiotics. This inflammatory process, with villi and enterocytes noticeably damaged compared with the control group, was more pronounced in brown trout. Under the current trial conditions, the B. subtilis + B. cereus toyoi had no positive impact in either trout species, on the contrary a harmful effect was observed.

Since probiotics have proved to be a viable alternative to antibiotics as enhancers of animal growth, the performance, uniformity and mortality rates of the jundiá (Rhamdia quelen) larvae fed on diets with different probiotics were evaluated. Jundiá larvae, aged four days post hatching, were fed during 21 days with the following diets, in four replicates, namely, CO: control feed, without probiotics; PP: feed with Pichia pastoris; SB: feed with Saccharomyces boulardii; BT: feed with Bacillus cereus var. toyoi. Among the tested probiotic, Bacillus cereus var. toyoi had the best results due to the fact that the larvae were 25% heavier than CO at the end of the first week; the difference increased to 28% by the end of the trial. Further, BT also improved uniformity and Fulton's condition factor. Larvae fed on Saccharomyces boulardii had the lowest body weight, whereas those fed on Pichia pastoris grew similarly to the control diet. Mortality rate was not affected by treatments. Bacillus cereus var. toyoi improves the performance and uniformity of the larvae, but does not affect mortality rate.

Summary Temperature modulates the metabolism in both fish and bacteria and therefore the effect of probiotic bacteria on its host may vary accordingly. The current study aim was to evaluate the effect of probiotic supplementation (Bacillus sp., Lactobacillus sp., Enterococcus sp., Pediococcus sp.) in juvenile seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax, when reared under different temperatures (17, 20 and 23°C). A control diet was tested against a probiotic‐supplemented diet, with a concentration of 3 × 109 CFU probiotic/kg diet. Antioxidant responses (TG, GSH, GSSG, GR, CAT and GSTs) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) were evaluated after 70 days of dietary probiotic supplementation. An effect of temperature was observed on LPO, which increased significantly in fish reared at 17°C (p < .05) compared to the 20 and 23°C groups. Total glutathione (TG) was significantly higher in the probiotic treatments in fish reared at 17 and 20°C (p < .05). In addition, a probiotic temperature interaction was observed for TG, reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, and for reduction of the oxidized glutathione ratio (GSH/GSSG; p < .05). In conclusion, the current study showed a strong temperature effect on oxidative stress responses, with an anti‐oxidant role of dietary probiotic supplementation at different rearing temperatures.
