Genetic parameters and relationships between heifers rebreeding and hip height in Nellore cattle

Abstract: -The objective of this study was to estimate heritability and verify the genetic correlations between heifers subsequent rebreeding with weaning hip height (WHH) and yearling hip height (YHH), using Bayesian inference. The (co)variance components and genetic parameters were estimated using an animal nonlinear (threshold) model for subsequent rebreeding and an animal linear model for WHH and YHH. The animal model included the contemporary group as the systematic effect and direct additive genetic and residual e… Show more

“…The Geweke test [ 26 ] indicated convergence of the chains ( Table 1 ). The heritability was 0.19 for HR and NC53 ( Table 1 ), in agreement with the estimates reported in other studies on the Nellore breed [ 2 , 5 , 6 ]. This result indicates that, in addition to being highly influenced by the environment, HR and NC53 are affected by an additive genetic component, a finding justifying the execution of GWAS.…”

“…Heifers that conceive soon after the first calving permit a fast return on investments. HR has been considered as a selection criterion in some breeding programs, particularly in indicine breeds [ 1 , 2 ] as cows of these breeds usually present low rebreeding rates [ 3 ]. This trait shows a high genetic correlation with other important reproductive traits such as age at first calving [ 4 ] and stayability [ 5 ].…”

“…These estimates are similar to those reported in the literature for the same traits in Nellore animals (Laureano et al, 2011;Boligon and de Albuquerque, 2012;Ferriani et al, 2013). All traits should, therefore, respond rapidly to direct selection, except for GWY, which exhibited a heritability of 0.12.…”

“…Studies show that this trait is Table 3 Estimates of marginal posterior distributions of variance components and heritabilities, obtained in bi-trait analyses, for number of calvings at 53 months (NC53), heifers rebreeding (HR), stayability (STAY) and scrotal circumference (SC) of Nellore Cattle strongly influenced by environmental factors (Pereira, 2008;Boligon and Albuquerque, 2012), as heifers have to conciliate pregnancy and subsequent lactation concomitant to their own growth. The heritability estimated in the present study for this trait was low (0.15 ± 0.021, Table 3) and similar to the value of 0.14 reported by Boligon and Albuquerque (2012), confirming the large influence of environmental effects on this trait.…”
