Performance and carcass characteristics of lambs fed on diets supplemented with glycerin from biodiesel production

Abstract: -This study was carried out to evaluate the influence of diets supplemented with glycerin as an alternative ingredient to corn on the performance and carcass characteristics of Santa Inês confined lambs. The study involved 27 lambs aged 90 days, having an average initial weight of 26.33 ± 0.15 kg. Lambs were randomly distributed into a control group and groups with diets containing 15 and 30% glycerin in the total feed. Diet was formulated with 40% roughage and 60% concentrate. The experimental design was compl… Show more

“…Several researchers have evaluated the effects of different levels of glycerin on feedlot lamb performance (Musselman et al, 2008;Gunn et al, 2010;Gomes et al, 2011;Lage et al, 2014a). However, few studies have focused on the potential changes in meat quality and nutritional value brought about by dietary glycerin (Françozo et al, 2013;Bartoñ et al, 2013;Lage et al, 2014b).…”

“…Although there are many studies on crude glycerin (MACH; BACH; DEVANT, 2009;PARSONS;SHELOR;DROUILLARD, 2009;GOMES et al, 2011), little information has been generated regarding the effects of this byproduct on the carcass and meat characteristics of cows and steer of dairy breed origin. On the other hand, because of the differences associated to dry matter intake and tissue deposition in the carcass in different animal categories (NRC, 1996) and the carcass and meat characteristics of cows and steer (VAZ et al, 2002;KUSS et al, 2005;PASCOAL et al, 2009;VAZ et al, 2010), it has become important to assess the animal product generated by including crude glycerin in the diet.…”
