We aimed to quantify the productive and metabolic responses, and digestive changes in dairy cows fed various concentrations of soybean oil (SBO) in high-concentrate, sugarcane-based diets. Eight rumen-cannulated multiparous Holstein cows in mid lactation (574 ± 19.1 kg of body weight and 122 ± 6.9 d in milk), averaging 22.5 ± 1.22 kg/d of milk were assigned to replicated 4 × 4 Latin squares. The experimental period lasted 21 d as follows: 14 d for adaptation, followed by a sampling period from d 15 to 21. The diets were formulated with increasing concentrations of SBO [% of dry matter (DM)]: control (0%), low (LSBO; 1.57%), medium (MSBO; 4.43%), and high (HSBO; 7.34%). Dry matter intake decreased quadratically in response to SBO addition. The greatest decrease in DM intake was observed in MSBO and HSBO diets. Both milk and energy-corrected milk yield were quadratically affected by the SBO inclusion, with a slight decrease up to MSBO and substantial decrease in the HSBO diet. The milk fat concentration linearly decreased from 3.78% in the control to 3.50% in the HSBO diet. The potentially digestible neutral detergent fiber digestibility in the rumen decreased from 55.7% in the control to 35.2% in the HSBO diet. The fractional rate of digestion of potentially digestible neutral detergent fiber in the rumen decreased linearly from 3.13 to 1.39%/h from the control to HSBO diet. The fractional rate of indigestible neutral detergent fiber passage in the rumen was quadratically affected, with the lowest value (2.25%/h) for the HSBO diet. Rumen pH increased from 6.42 to 6.67, and ammonia nitrogen decreased from 28.1 to 21.4 mg/dL, in the control and HSBO diets, respectively. Rumen volatile fatty acids decreased quadratically, with the greatest decrease observed in MSBO and HSBO diets. Serum concentrations of glucose, fatty acids, and β-hydroxybutyrate were unaffected by SBO inclusion. However, serum concentrations of total cholesterol and high- and low-density lipoproteins linearly increased with increasing concentrations of SBO in the diet. Inclusion of SBO at concentrations from 4.43 to 7.34% of the diet DM decreased DM intake, energy-corrected milk production, fiber digestibility, and rumen fermentation and was thus not recommended. Soybean oil supplementation at 1.57% of the diet DM proved to be a safe concentration for dairy cows fed high-concentrate diets with sugarcane as the sole forage.

SUMMARY The effects of cassava wastewater on nutrient digestibility and rumen protozoa were evaluated in 32 Santa Inês sheep fed a diet with Tifton hay, ground corn cob, and concentrate, containing 0, 500, 1000, or 1500 mL cassava wastewater. Uncastrated sheep at an average age of 167 days and average weight of 25.3 kg were housed in individual stalls and distributed in a randomized complete design with four treatments and eight replicates. The experimental period was 70 days: 15 days for adaptation to the diets and 60 days to collect the ingredients and diets supplied. Prior to this stage, the animals were adapted to the consumption of cassava wastewater, in collective cages, for seven days. Apparent digestibility was determined by partial feces collection and by using the LIPE® external marker in 250-mg capsules. The apparent digestibility of nutrients did not differ (P>0.05) in relation to the cassava wastewater levels tested. Eleven genera of rumen protozoa were identified, and they formed a community that, except for Ophryoscolex, did not differ among the cassava wastewater treatments with respect to composition. However, Entodinium species were observed at a higher density (P<0.05) in sheep that received 1500 mL of cassava wastewater. The use of cassava wastewater in the sheep diet does not affect the digestibility of nutrients or composition of rumen protozoa; however, it causes a significant increase in Entodinium density.

RESUMO -Com o intuito de avaliar dietas para cabras Anglo-Nubianas do tipo misto em lactação, foram utilizadas oito cabras com peso médio 37,9 ± 1,72 kg, entre a 2ª e 4ª ordem de lactação, no terço médio da lactação, distribuídas em duplo quadrado latino 4 x 4. A ordenha foi realizada as 7 e 16 h. Os tratamentos consistiram de quatro dietas formuladas com diferentes volumosos (silagem de capim-elefante associada ou não aos fenos de leucena ou de estilosantes) e milho em grão, acrescidas ou não do farelo de soja. A suplementação proteica com fenos de leguminosas ou a associação destes ao farelo de soja não influenciou (p > 0,05) o consumo de matéria seca, fibra em detergente ácido, fibra em detergente neutro e de nutrientes digestíveis totais. A digestibilidade das frações alimentares foi menor (p < 0,05) quando da suplementação proteica exclusiva com feno de leucena. Não houve efeito (p > 0,05) das dietas sobre a produção e composição do leite e nem influência da suplementação sobre o balanço de nitrogênio, N urinário e N no leite. Dietas formuladas com os fenos das leguminosas tropicais leucena e estilosantes, como fontes proteicas, em substituição ao farelo de soja para cabras Anglo-Nubianas do tipo misto aos 60 a 108 dias de lactação não afetam o consumo de matéria seca, a produção e a composição do leite, além de promover balanço de compostos nitrogenados positivo e atender as exigências proteicas. Recomendam-se estudos em longo prazo ou em outras fases do ciclo de produção a fim de validar o uso dessas forrageiras como fonte de proteína em dietas para cabras em lactação. Feno de leguminosas.ABSTRACT -In order to evaluate diets for lactating mixed-breed Anglo-Nubian goats, eight goats with an average weight of 37.9 ± 1.72 kg were used. These were in their 2nd to 4th lactation number, in the middle third of the lactating period, and were distributed in a double latin 4 x 4 square. Milking was carried out at 7:00 and 16:00. The treatments consisted of four diets made up of different forages (elephant grass silage, with or without leucaena or estilosantes hay) and maize grains with or without added soybean meal. Protein supplements of leguminous hay, or mixing these with the soybean meal, did not influence (p > 0.05) the intake of dry-matter, acid detergent fibre, neutral detergent fibre or total digestible nutrients. The digestibility of the dietary fractions was lower (p < 0.05) for protein supplement with leucaena hay only. There was no effect (p > 0.05) from the diets on the production and composition of the milk, neither did the supplements influence the balance of nitrogen, urinary N, or N in the milk.
