-The objective of this study was to evaluate, in Nellore heifers, intake and digestibility of hydrolyzed sugarcane stored for different periods. The experimental design used was a 4 × 4 Latin square, four diets, four Nellore heifers with ruminal cannulas (initial body weight 285.4±23.08 kg and average initial age 14 months) and four periods of 21 days.The diets were composed by fresh sugarcane (time zero) or hydrolyzed sugarcane with addition of 0.5% of hydrated lime, stored for 24, 48 or 72 hours, as the unique forage. Intake and digestibility of feed fractions, nitrogen balance, microbial synthesis efficiency, total number of ruminal protozoans and ammoniacal nitrogen did not significantly change by storing sugarcane with addition of 0.5% of hydrated lime. Sugarcane pH varied quadratically for storage time, with maximum pH of 7.02 after 24 hours from lime addition. Ruminal liquid pH values were higher for heifers fed fresh sugarcane, in comparison with those fed hydrolyzed sugarcane. Sugarcane treated with 0.5% of hydrated lime stored for up to 72 hours does not change ruminal digestion to alter the amount of feed consumed by pubescent Nellore heifers. Thus, lime is a viable technology, once it allows long-duration storage and bee control on treated forage, which contributes to animal feeding logistics.

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the use of chemically treated tropical forage in nutritional profile of bovine milk. We evaluated four cane sugar silages: without additive (control); with 1% urea; with 0.5% urea + 0.5% calcium oxide (CaO); with 1% CaO, with base on natural matter, the feeding of dairy cows. There was no difference in the physical‐chemical milk characteristics. The sum of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) was higher for diet with sugar cane silage with 1% CaO. The activity of the enzyme Δ9‐desaturase in the mammary gland was greatest for myristoleic acid (C14:1 c9) and palmitoleic acid (C16:1 c9) with the diet with sugar cane silage with 1% urea. Among the evaluated diets, the best one was that used 1% CaO in sugar cane silage because it provided higher proportions of PUFA, Omega‐3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid and its isomers. Practical Applications There is considerable interest in altering the fatty acid composition of milk with the overall aim of improving the long‐term health of consumers. In general, milk fat synthesis directly responds to changes in ruminal fermentation pattern, given that in this process both precursors and metabolites of regulatory synthesis in the mammary gland are produced. The use of additives in the diet also changes the pattern of rumen fermentation and consequently the fat synthesis in milk. There are very few studies that seek to evaluate the effect of additives in the ensiling process on rumen environment and milk characteristics. More than that, study the safety and quality of the product for consumers.

Ingestive behavior of lambs fed diets consisting of fresh sugarcane with urea, bagasse treated with calcium oxide, and urea ammoniated sugarcane bagasse supplemented with concentrate mixture in 50:50 ratio were evaluated. For this, 34 wethers Santa Inês in their growing phase, with an average age of 3.0 ± 0.6 months and a mean initial live weight of 17.8± 5.2 kg were used. The animals were distributed in a completely randomized design and subjected to visual observation periods of 5 days, for 24 h a day, during the experimental period. Dry matter (DM) intake and intake efficiency of DM were higher (P < 0.05) for animals receiving fresh sugarcane with urea. The animals which were fed with bagasse treated with calcium oxide had higher (P < 0.05) consumption of neutral detergent fiber, longer feeding and chewing time (P < 0.05), and shorter (P < 0.05) idling time. The time spent on chewing the ruminal bolus did not differ from one diet to the other (P > 0.05). Grams of dry matter per ruminated bolus were similar among animals fed with fresh sugarcane and ammoniated bagasse (P > 0.05) but lower (P < 0.05) in animals fed with bagasse treated with calcium oxide. Rumination efficiency values, in grams of dry matter per hour, and grams of neutral detergent fiber per hour for all three diets were similar (P > 0.05) to those found for feeding efficiency. The number of feeding and rumination periods was not affected (P > 0.05) by diet. Based on the intake and ingestive behavior responses, the fresh sugarcane with urea compared to bagasse treated with calcium oxide and ammoniated bagasse was found to be the better alternative feed for use in lamb diets.
