The aim of this study was to identify the most adequate level of calcium oxide (CaO) in the treatment of sugar cane by evaluating the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of dry matter. The sugar cane was homogenized with CaO levels 0, 0.75, 1.5, 2.25, 3.0, 3.75 and 4.5%, in natura matter, for 24 hours. The dry matter and mineral matter increased, while the organic matter of the sugar cane decreased (P <0.05) linearly as a result of the CaO levels. The CaO had no effect on the levels of crude protein and ether extract. The phosphorus concentration remained unchanged, but there was a significant increase (P<0.05) in the calcium content. The contents of neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber and cellulose decreased linearly with the levels of CaO. The average levels of indigestible dry matter and indigestible neutral detergent fiber significantly decreased with increasing levels of CaO. The results showed that the in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) was different between fresh sugar cane and sugar cane with added levels of CaO from 1.5%. -The objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition and the fermentative parameters of heart of palm waste produced from Alexander Palm, ensiled with chemical additives. Treatments consisted of silage of the sheath with or without calcium oxide. In the silage without calcium oxide, we evaluated the control silage (without additive) and the silage enriched with 5.0 g kg −1 urea (urea). In the silage with calcium oxide, we evaluated the silage enriched with 5.0 g kg −1 calcium oxide (control) and the silage enriched with 5.0 g kg −1 urea and 5.0 g kg −1 calcium oxide (urea). Experimental silos were distributed in a completely randomized design in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement (inclusion or lack of lime × inclusion or lack of urea), with four replicates. Crude protein concentration was greater in the silages that received urea, whereas in the case of neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber, the lowest levels were found in the control silage. Control silage had the lowest pH (3.75) and the silages that received lime displayed the lowest lactic acid content. Effluent losses were greater in the control silage and in the silage with lime (56.1 kg t −1 and 58.4 kg t −1 , respectively). Silages prepared with waste from heart of palm production and enriched only with urea showed a better chemical composition and improved fermentation parameter estimates. We recommend the use of this waste only with additives that can improve the chemical characteristics of the forage. Without additives, unwanted fermentation processes may occur and compromise the quality of the silage.

RESUMOO uso de biomassa lignocelulósica vem ao longo dos anos ganhando destaque nas matrizes energéticas mundiais, pois o seu potencial energético, já comprovado, demonstra que a mesma pode substituir parcial ou totalmente diversos combustíveis fósseis. A menor agressão ao meio ambiente e suas características físico-químicas que permitem ser processada por diversas técnicas de geração de energia o fazem uma excelente opção de obtenção de energia limpa. O beneficiamento industrial do palmito produz diversos resíduos lignocelulósicos, entre estes, a casca do palmito. Esta biomassa quando devidamente valorada pode ser aproveitada também para geração de energias térmica e elétrica. Considerando o potencial energético da casca de palmito, este trabalho objetivou caracterizar as propriedades físico-químicas de resíduos de casca de palmito e avaliar seu uso como biomassa energética após um processo de beneficiamento de torrefação em diferentes temperaturas de trabalho: 240 °C; 260 °C; 280 °C e 300 °C e tempos de residência: 10 minutos; 20 minutos e 30 minutos utilizando um forno tipo mufla em ambiente com baixo teor de oxigênio. A coleta da biomassa foi realizada em uma indústria, localizada no município de Abaetetuba-Pa. O material coletado e torrificado foi caracterizado por análise imediata que funcionou como um indicativo para um estudo preliminar do potencial energético da biomassa. A amostra com melhor relação de eliminação de umidade, baixa degradação de voláteis e baixas concentrações de cinzas foi a torrefação a 240 °C por 10 minutos. Its lower aggression to the environment and its physico-chemical characteristics that allow it to be processed by several techniques of energy generation make it an excellent option to obtain clean energy.
