This study aimed to quantify, describe, and identify plant litter production and nutrient accumulation zones in different forest-pasture integration (FPI) systems and forest strata of the Cerrado-Amazon transition on typical orthic Quartzarenic Neosol using spatial analysis, principal component analysis, and non-hierarchical fuzzy k-mean clustering logic techniques. The evaluations were performed at two FPI systems comprising a combination of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu and thinned native vegetation with 50 and 75% (FPI-I and FPI-II, respectively) shade in an original thinned forest (NF-I) and in an original intact forest (NF-II) with 80 and 95% shade, respectively. An area of 4,000 m² (40 x 100 m) that contained 32 sampling points arranged in a 4 x 25 m grid was demarcated for each treatment. Plant litter was collected using 32 collectors installed at equidistant points. Twelve nylon bags were placed on the soil surface at each point to evaluate the plant litter decomposition, totaling 384 bags per treatment. It was possible to quantify, describe, and define plant litter production and nutrient accumulation zones in different FPI systems and forest strata of the Cerrado-Amazon transition on orthic Quartzarenic Neosol using geostatistical analysis, principal components, and non-hierarchical fuzzy k-mean clustering logic procedures. The development of anthelmintic resistance by helminths can be slowed by maintaining refugia on pasture or in untreated hosts. Targeted selective treatments (TST) may achieve this through the treatment only of individuals that would benefit most from anthelmintic, according to certain criteria. However TST consequences on cattle are uncertain, mainly due to difficulties of comparison between alternative strategies. We developed a mathematical model to compare: 1) the most ‘beneficial’ indicator for treatment selection and 2) the method of selection of calves exposed to Ostertagia ostertagi, i.e. treating a fixed percentage of the population with the lowest (or highest) indicator values versus treating individuals who exceed (or are below) a given indicator threshold. The indicators evaluated were average daily gain (ADG), faecal egg counts (FEC), plasma pepsinogen, combined FEC and plasma pepsinogen, versus random selection of individuals. Treatment success was assessed in terms of benefit per R (BPR), the ratio of average benefit in weight gain to change in frequency of resistance alleles R (relative to an untreated population). The optimal indicator in terms of BPR for fixed percentages of calves treated was plasma pepsinogen and the worst ADG; in the latter case treatment was applied to some individuals who were not in need of treatment. The reverse was found when calves were treated according to threshold criteria, with ADG being the best target indicator for treatment. This was also the most beneficial strategy overall, with a significantly higher BPR value than any other strategy, but its degree of success depended on the chosen threshold of the indicator. The study shows strong support for TST, with all strategies showing improvements on calves treated selectively, compared with whole-herd treatment at 3, 8, 13 weeks post-turnout. The developed model appeared capable of assessing the consequences of other TST strategies on calf populations.

R E S U M OAs pastagens naturais e biodiversas que suportam a pecuária extensiva são caracterizadas por marcada variação da biomassa das espécies botânicas presentes, e do seu estado fenológico ao longo das estações do ano. Nestas circunstâncias, a utilização do alimento e a ocupação do espaço da pastagem podem ser muito heterogéneas devido, entre outras causas, ao comportamento de pastoreio dos ruminantes. Uma gestão eficiente do pastoreio exige conhecimento sobre o mecanismo de ajuste do comportamento de pastoreio à pastagem. Embora exista tecnologia GNSS que possibilita a monitorização do comportamento de pastoreio, o seu custo de aquisição é elevado, limitando a sua aplicação aos estudos de investigação.O presente trabalho revê os princípios que permitem a aplicação desta tecnologia e tem por objectivo estudar a utilização de recetores GNSS comerciais de baixo custo ("commercial of the shelf -COTS": CatTrack TM ). Foram utilizados seis recetores, durante seis períodos de recolha de dados, ao longo de dois meses de pastoreio contínuo de uma pastagem natural, tendo sido a exactidão dos recetores de 14m e de 40m em testes estáticos e dinâmicos, respectivamente, a precisão de 3m e a fiabilidade de 80%.O equipamento testado permitiu diferenciar as actividades dos animais (pastoreio, repouso e trânsito), determinar a localização de ovinos em pastoreio, e caracterizar padrões, percursos e zonas preferenciais. Conclui-se que o equipamento COTS apresenta uma elevada relação qualidade/preço, pelo que pode vir a ser uma ferramenta importante para suporte das decisões que são essenciais a um maneio mais preciso da pastagem. The use of the food resources and the occupation of grazing space can be very heterogeneous in such conditions due to ruminants grazing behaviour. Successful grazing and pasture management requires an understanding of the adjustment mechanisms behind the grazing behaviour that enables adaptation to grazing conditions. Use of GNSS technology allows a quick and effective grazing data collection which is, however expensive, limiting its application to research purposes. This paper reviews the principles for the application of GNSS technology and evaluates the use of inexpensive commercial GNSS receivers (commercial of the shelf -COTS: CatTrack TM "). Six receivers were used for six data collection period over two months of continuous grazing on a natural pasture. The measured static and dynamic accuracy of the receivers is 14m and 40m, respectively. The precision was 3m and the reliability 80%.
