Precision livestock production: tools and concepts

Abstract: -Precision livestock production (PLP) is the augmentation of precision agriculture (PA) concepts to include all components of agroecosystems, particularly animals and plant-animal interactions. Soil, plants and soil-plant interactions are the subjects of PA or site-specific farming, where the main principle is to exploit natural spatial heterogeneity to increase efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. For the most part, PA has been studied and developed for intensive cropping systems with little attention… Show more

“…The seasonality in biomass deposition by trees was similar to that found by Silva et al (2007), Sanches et al (2008, 2009 in a forest of the Amazon-Cerrado transition on orthic Quartzarenic Neosol. The mean plant litter production was 25.33, 28.00, 38.73, and 46.16 g m -2 month -1 among the FPI-I, FPI-II, NF-I, and NF-II sites, respectively.…”

“…The most feasible option is treatment according to ADG as measurements are instantaneous with fewer additional diagnostic costs. Although currently weighing scales are expensive, individual weighing is labour intensive and poses risk of injury to both cattle and humans, the rapid advances in precision farming may change all these (Laca, 2009). Nevertheless, convincing farmers to convert to TST strategies may not be straightforward, as has been suggested for sheep, especially because the benefits from reducing the rate of anthelmintic resistance development may not be immediately obvious.…”
