The use of alternative foods, such as agroindustrial residues, for animal feeding aims to reduce production costs and increase animal productivity. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different levels of licury cake added to the diet of non-standardbred lambs (NSB). The study involved 20 male castrated NSB lambs, with an average age of 120±5 days and initial and final average weights of 25±2 kg and 34±2 kg, respectively; the lambs were kept in a feedlot and distributed in a completely random block design for 75 days. Three isonitrogenic diets (17% protein) with three levels of licury cake supplementation (8, 16 and 24%) and a control diet (0% licury cake) were used. Elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) concentrate in a 50:50 ratio and the different levels of licuri cake were provided twice a day. The residue normality and variances compared by orthogonal and polynomial regression contrasts were verified for data analysis at 5% significance. The licury cake levels did not influence (P>0.05) the dry matter intake, minimum and maximum fat thickness, empty gastrointestinal tract, spleen, heart, kidneys, anterior and posterior quarters, muscle yield, marbling, other tissues or ash. There was a quadratic effect (P<0.05) for the average daily weight, skin yield and crude protein. Increasing the levels of licury cake reduced (P<0.05) real yield, loin eye area, and increased (P<0.05) leg yield, bone and moisture. A diet including up to 13% licury cake can be indicated as an alternative feeding source for feedlot NSB sheep.Index terms: Centesimal composition; byproduct; liver. RESUMOO uso de alimentos alternativos na dieta animal, como resíduos agroindustriais, tem como propósito reduzir os custos de produção e aumentar a produtividade animal. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da inclusão de diferentes níveis de torta de licuri em dieta de cordeiros sem padrão racial definido (SPRD). Foram confinados 20 cordeiros, machos e castrados, com idade média de 120±5 dias, distribuídos em delineamento em blocos inteiramente casualizados, durante 75 dias. Foram utilizadas três dietas isonitrogenadas (17% de proteína), sendo três níveis de inclusão de torta de licuri (8, 16 e 24%) e uma ração testemunha (0%). Foi fornecido o capim elefante (Pennisetum purpureum) e concentrado na proporção de 50:50 e os diferentes níveis de torta, fornecidas duas vezes ao dia. Para análise dos dados, foi verificada a normalidade dos resíduos e as variâncias comparadas por contrastes ortogonais e regressão polinomial, considerando nível de significância de 5%. Os níveis de torta de licuri não influenciaram (P>0,05) o consumo de matéria seca, espessura de gordura mínima e máxima, trato gastrintestinal vazio, baço, coração, rins, quarto dianteiros e traseiros, rendimento de músculo, gordura intermuscular, outros tecidos e cinzas. ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of propylene glycol (PG) added to the water sheep drank during lactation on protein and mineral metabolites of their suckling lambs. We assessed 24 lambs born to sheep fed levels of propylene glycol in the water (0; 1.5; 3.0 and 4.5%). The sheep were subdivided according to a completely randomized design, in a split-plot scheme. There was no interaction effect between lamb age and amount of PG provided to the sheep on the concentration of protein and mineral metabolites of the lambs. The concentration of total protein, globulin, and albumin: globulin ratio, uric acid and creatinine in the lambs was not affected by the inclusion of PG (p > 0.05). The concentration of urea and magnesium in the lambs presented a quadratic response as a function of the addition of PG; there was linear response for albumin concentration. The addition of PG to the sheep's diet and the lambs' age affect the concentration of protein and mineral metabolites in the lambs. However, using PG to feed lactating sheep does not have negative effects on the lambs' blood parameters, as evidenced by the absence of nutritional deficiency (protein and minerals) in the suckling lambs.Keywords: albumin, globulin, sheep, protein, urea, water.Inclusão de propilenoglicol na dieta de ovelhas e efeito nos metabólitos proteicos e minerais de suas crias RESUMO. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da inclusão do propilenoglicol na água de ovelhas durante a lactação sobre os metabólitos proteicos e minerais de suas crias. Foram avaliados 24 cordeiros (as), filhos (as) de ovelhas que receberam níveis de propilenoglicol (0; 1,5; 3,0 e 4,5%) na água. As ovelhas foram distribuídas em delineamento inteiramente casualizado em esquema de parcela subdividida. Não houve efeito de interação entre a idade dos cordeiros (a)s e a quantidade(s) de propilenoglicol oferecido para as mães na concentração dos metabólitos proteicos e minerais dos cordeiros. A concentração de proteínas totais, globulinas, relação albumina:globulinas, ácido úrico e creatinina nos cordeiros não foi afetada pela inclusão de propilenoglicol na água das matrizes. A concentração de ureia e magnésio nos cordeiros apresentou resposta quadrática em função da inclusão de propilenoglicol na dieta das ovelhas, sendo que para a concentração de albumina houve resposta linear. A inclusão de propilenoglicol na dieta das ovelhas e a idade dos cordeiros alteram a concentração dos metabólitos proteicos e minerais nas crias. Contudo, a utilização do propilenoglicol na alimentação de ovelhas lactantes não proporciona efeitos negativos nos parâmetros sanguíneos dos cordeiros, o que é evidenciado pela ausência de déficit nutricional (proteína e minerais) nos cordeiros lactentes.

Models for estimating feed intake in small ruminants

-This review deals with the most relevant limits and developments of the modeling of intake of sheep and goats reared intensively and extensively. Because small ruminants are normally fed ad libitum, voluntary feed intake is crucial in feeding tactics and strategies aimed at optimal animal production. The effects of genetic, neuroendocrine, hormonal, feed and environmental factors on voluntary feed intake were discussed. Then, several mathematical models to estimate dry matter intake (DMI) were examined, with emphasis on empirical models for sheep and goats in intensive farm systems or in extensive areas under pasture or rangeland conditions. A sensitivity analysis of four models of prediction of DMI in housed lactating dairy sheep and meat sheep breeds was also presented. This work evidenced a large variability in the approaches used and in the variables considered for housed sheep and goats. Regarding the estimation of feed intake for grazing sheep and browsing goats, the accuracy of estimates based on empirical models developed so far is very low when applied out of the boundaries of the studied system. Feeding experiments indoors and outdoors remain fundamental for a better modeling and understanding of the interactions between feeds and small ruminants. However, there is a need for biological and theoretical frameworks in which these experiments should be carried out, so that appropriate empirical or mechanistic equations to predict DMI could be developed.
