Heritability estimates and genetic correlations were obtained for body weight and scrotal circumference, adjusted, respectively, to 12 (BW12 and SC12) and 18 (BW18 and SC18) months of age, for 10 742 male Nellore cattle. The adjustments to SC12 and SC18 were made using a nonlinear logistic function, while BW12 and BW18 were obtained by linear adjustment. The contemporary groups (CGs) were defined from animals born on the same farm, in the same year and birth season. The mean heritability estimates obtained using the restricted maximum likelihood method in bi-trait analysis were 0.25, 0.25, 0.29 and 0.42 for BW12, BW18, SC12 and SC18, respectively. The genetic correlations were 0.30 6 0.11, 0.21 6 0.13, 0.21 6 0.11, 20.08 6 0.15, 0.16 6 0.12 and 0.89 6 0.04 between the traits BW12 and BW18; BW12 and SC12; BW12 and SC18; BW18 and SC12; BW18 and SC18; and SC12 and SC18. The heritability for SC18 was considerably greater than for SC12, suggesting that this should be included as a selection criterion. The genetic correlation between BW18 and SC12 was close to zero, indicating that these traits did not influence each other. The contrary occurred between SC12 and SC18, indicating that selection using one of these could alter the other. Because of the mean magnitudes of heritabilities in the various measurements of weight and scrotal perimeter, it is suggested that the practice of individual selection for these traits is possible.

Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar componentes de variância e parâmetros genéticos, incluindo correlações genéticas, fenotípicas e herdabilidade das características produtivas e reprodutivas de búfalos na Amazônia brasileira. As estimativas de herdabilidade (h 2 ) das características variaram de 0,04 a 0,05 no primeiro intervalo entre partos, de 0,0 a 0,26 no intervalo entre partos, e de 0,0 a 0,25 no período de serviço, refletindo grande influência ambiental. Na idade ao primeiro parto, a herdabilidade variou de 0,12 a 0,38. Em relação ao peso ao nascer, a raça Murrah foi a que apresentou a mais alta h 2 (0,62). As correlações genéticas variaram de 1,00 a -1,00. Foram negativas as correlações genéticas entre idade ao primeiro parto e peso da fêmea adulta (-0,12 a -1,00 dependendo da raça), assim como as correlações entre período de serviço, peso ao nascer e peso da fêmea adulta (0,01 a -1,00). O efeito de ambiente permanente (c 2 ) variou de 0,000 a 0,155. Somente no intervalo entre partos para a raça Jafarabadi pode-se considerar que houve c 2 significativo (0,458). O efeito materno (m 2 ) no peso ao nascer variou de baixo a médio, nas raças Carabao, Jafarabadi, Mediterrâneo e Murrah (0,11, 0,17, 0,37, 0,04, respectivamente).Termos para indexação: correlações genéticas, herdabilidades, índices de produção e reprodução. Genetic parameters of production and reproduction traits of buffaloes in the Brazilian AmazonAbstract -The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters, including genetic and phenotypic correlations as well as heritabilities, for production and reproduction traits of buffaloes in the Brazilian Amazon. Heritability estimates varied from 0.04 to 0.05 for FCI (first calving interval), 0.0 to 0.26 for CI (calving interval) and 0.0 to 0.25 for SP (service period), reflecting high environmental variation for these traits. For AFC (age at first calving) the heritabilities varied from 0.12 to 0.38. The Murrah breed showed the highest heritabilitiy for BW (birth weight) (0.62). Genetic correlations varied between 1.00 and -1.00 depending on the traits. There were negative genetic correlations between AFC and MFW (mature female weight) (-0.12 to -1.00 depending on breed) as well as between SP, BW and MFW (0.01 to -1.00). Permanent environment effects of the traits were low (0.000 to 0.155) and only that for CI in the Jafarabadi breed could be considered significant (0.458). Maternal effects for birth weight were low to medium (0.11, 0.17, 0.37 and 0.04 for Carabao, Jaffarabadi, Mediterranean and Murrah, respectively).

The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for growth traits in Mexican Nellore cattle. A univariate animal model was used to estimate (co)variance components and genetic parameters. The traits evaluated were birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), and yearling weight (YW). Models used included the fixed effects of contemporary groups (herd, sex, year, and season of birth) and age of dam (linear and quadratic) as a covariate. They also included the animal, dam, and residual as random effects. Phenotypic means (SD) for BW, WW, and YW were 31.4 (1.6), 175 (32), and 333 (70) kg, respectively. Direct heritability, maternal heritability, and the genetic correlation between additive direct and maternal effects were 0.59, 0.17, and -0.90 for BW; 0.29, 0.17, and -0.90 for WW; and 0.24, 0.15, and -0.86 for YW, respectively. The results showed moderate direct and maternal heritabilities for the studied traits. The genetic correlations between direct and maternal effects were negative and high for all the traits indicating important tradeoffs between direct and maternal effects. There are significant possibilities for genetic progress for the growth traits studied if they are included in a breeding program considering these associations.
