Show more

“…These rumen pH values are within the ideal range for action of cellulosic bacteria in the rumen (Russel & Wilson, 1996). The influence of urea on rumen pH was reported by Carmo et al (2001), who, in a work with sugar cane containing soybean meal, corn gluten and associations with urea as nitrogen sources, noted that the presence of urea in the diets increased rumen Table 5 -Rumen microorganism composition in bovine fed diets with fresh or ensiled sugar cane and corn silage pH due to the release of ammonium, and that the pH was kept from 6.27 to 6.87, values close to the ones obtained in this experiment.…”

“…Data observed for NDF digestibility in the present study (20.0%) was lower than that described in the literature (41.0% to 47.0%) (Tibo et al, 2000;Borges et al, 2008). This effect is probably related to high contents of highly fermentable carbohydrates in diets and to the low quality fibre of sugarcane, which is not much available to ruminal degradation probably because of its low content of protein (Carmo et al, 2001). Also, NDF digestibility could be reduced when ruminal pH remained four hours at values below 6.0 (De Veth and Kolver, 2001).…”
