Nitric oxide release using natural rubber latex as matrix

Abstract: Nitric oxide (NO) is a diffusible messenger that has been involved in numerous physiological processes ranging from vasodilatation and antimicrobial properties to wound healing. The beneficial effects can be attributed to the role NO plays in angiogenesis, inflammation and tissue remodeling. In the present work, a polymeric device for the sustained site specific delivery of nitric oxide using a latex rubber matrix from Hevea brasiliensis which encapsulates the spin trap iron(II)-diethyldithiocarbamate complex … Show more

“…The CH 3 asymmetric stretching is observed at 2961 cm −1 . These FTIR correlations for NRL are consistent with the earlier work [30]. Additionally, the FTIR spectrum of NRL + Dic-K showed the characteristic bands observed to Dic-K as by NRL, proving the stability of the drug after its incorporation into the biomembrane.…”

“…This method allows interaction between drug and the target organ/tissue in a more specific way. DDS consists on delivering the drug in a lower concentration, a controlled form along a previously established period of time [3,4]. It brings advantages as the reduction in the frequency of the drug dosages taken by the patient, more uniform drug effect, reduction of drug side-effects, and reduced fluctuation in circulating drug levels.…”

“…It consists in cis-1,4-polyisoprene, extracted from Hevea brasiliensis, widely employed as raw material. In the industry, the material is found in the manufacturing of gloves, condoms, balloons, and other medical and dental devices [1,3,6]. The mechanical properties are its strengths; its of easy manipulation, low cost product and presents high mechanical resistance.…”

“…Its use as an occlusive membrane for bone regeneration has already been tested in animal models, with satisfactory results [23,24] . Other literature data indicate its biocompatibility [25,26] , its angiogenic potential [21,27,28] and its ability to act as a drug delivery system [29][30][31] . Thus, the objective of this work was to study the effect of polyurethane granules (Polyquil  ) as graft material in bone regeneration cases.…”
