Measuring and Modeling the Plasticity of Clays

Abstract: The measurement of plasticity in clay bodies is crucial in order to get products free of defects and with less processing time. However, tests which simulate the behavior of the clay during processing and the mathematical modeling of some of its characteristics, particularly the plasticity, become difficult because many variables are involved and there is no consensus on the choice of method to be used. This study aimed to develop a mathematical model based on compression test to evaluate the plasticity of cla… Show more

“…The dried unfired sludge was blended in different proportions (up to 35% by weight) with the basic mixture powder in a laboratory horizontal tumbler for two hours. The plasticity of the different blends was determined using the Pfefferkorn method [12].…”

“…Digital photographs were taken at intervals with Nikon D3400 digital camera and the concurrent diameter measurements were determined using image analysis tool (Image Tool). The instantaneous radius and applied forces were determined using equations ( 1) and (2). Experimental data was plotted and fitted non-linearly to produce the theoretical curves.…”
