Purpose: The aim of this study was to test the association between quality of sleep and stress in individuals with temporomandibular disorder (TMD).Methods: The study sample consisted of 354 adult subjects (males and females) from the municipality of Piacatu, São Paulo state, in the Southeast region of Brazil. Data were collected using the Fonseca's Questionnaire to record the level of TMD, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess quality of sleep and the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS) to record stress level. The data were analyzed by the software Epi Info 2000 version 3.2 using a chi-square test at the 0.05 level of significance.Results: One hundred and eighty (50.8%) subjects had some level of TMD. The statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between the three stress scores and the presence or absence of sleep disorders, considering an overall PSQI score > 5 as an indicator of a subject with sleep problems (P<0.01).Conclusion: Both quality of sleep and stress levels were associated with TMD in this sample.

RESUMOObjetivo: descrever e classificar a presença de disfunção temporomandibular em trabalhadores usuários de equipamentos de proteção auditiva individual. Método: tratou-se de um estudo transversal descritivo, com caráter observacional, desenvolvido em uma indústria de tintas. A população foi composta por 46 funcionários de ambos os sexos (com 94,44% do gênero masculino) com idade entre 20 a 50 anos (idade media de 36,24 anos), expostos a ruído intenso (90 dBNA) que faziam uso de equipamento de proteção individual auditiva tipo concha. Na coleta de dados foram realizados os seguintes procedimentos: triagem fonoaudiológica das funções orais, avaliação clínica otorrinolaringológica e diagnóstico de disfunção temporomandibular ao exame clínico. Os dados foram analisados pela estatística descritiva. Resultados: a queixa predominante foi dor na região que envolve a orelha e articulação temporomadibular. Observou-se que 87% apresentaram diagnóstico positivo de DTM, em que 83% tinham dor miofacial, 11% dor miofacial com limitação de abertura oral e 6% apresentaram diagnóstico de dor miofacial associada a deslocamento de disco com redução de abertura. Conclusões: a maioria dos trabalhadores apresentou disfunção de ordem muscular. Ressalta-se a importância de considerar a possibilidade da influência deste equipamento sobre o aparecimento ou intensificação do transtorno mencionado. Os protetores auditivos são instrumentos utilizados nas indústrias. Estes são classificados basicamente em dois modelos: os circum-auriculares, também chamados extra-auriculares, supra-aurais ou "de concha" e os de inserção, intra-auriculares ou simplesmente conhecidos como "plugs" 2 . DESCRITORES:Pesquisas na área da saúde auditiva do trabalhador 3,4 demonstram uma crescente preocupação com o conforto do trabalhador com relação ao uso dos EPI's, na qual se observa que, embora esta seja a única opção individual viável para redução do INTRODUÇÃODe acordo com a NR-6 quando esgotados todos os meios conhecidos para a eliminação do risco de acidentes ocupacionais e este persistir, mesmo que reduzido, é necessária a utilização, pelo trabalhador, de equipamentos de proteção auditiva individual

Introduction: Bruxism is characterized by the parafunctional act of tightening or grinding the teeth, which may occur in a conscious or unconscious way, during sleep or in wakefulness. It has become a growing concern in recent years due to its negative impact on quality of life (QOL) and also because it is considered an important risk factor for temporomandibular disorders. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the QOL related to bruxism in physiotherapy teachers from a private institution through a questionnaire and their perception for such parafunction. Method: A cross-sectional, quantitative and exploratory study. The self-perception of bruxism was assessed through three questions from the Fonseca Anamnestic Indexand the perspective of QLV through the Quality of Life Questionnaire (SF-36), with a sample of 38 teachers of both genders. Results: Based on the results found, the level of statistical significance was set at p<0,05 for all tests. Among the 38 interviewees, 47,4% (n = 18) of professionals were observed with bruxism, with a higher prevalence in the female gender. Regarding the comparisons of QOL in relation to bruxism, a statistically significant difference was found in relation to the dimension of Pain (p=0,014), in which the mean for the bruxism group was (59,8) and without bruxism (78,5). Conclusion: There is a relation of the bruxism with the quality of life of the interviewees, and this habit mainly interferes in the domain of pain. Another aspect that was shown to be significantly associated with bruxism was nervous tension, in which the tense and nervous professionals were associated with self-perception of bruxism.
