The aim of this study was to determine the reproducibility, reliability and validity of measurements in digital models compared to plaster models. Fifteen pairs of plaster models were obtained from orthodontic patients with permanent dentition before treatment. These were digitized to be evaluated with the program Cécile3 v2.554.2 beta. Two examiners measured three times the mesiodistal width of all the teeth present, intercanine, interpremolar and intermolar distances, overjet and overbite. The plaster models were measured using a digital vernier. The t-Student test for paired samples and interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were used for statistical analysis. The ICC of the digital models were 0.84 ± 0.15 (intra-examiner) and 0.80 ± 0.19 (inter-examiner). The average mean difference of the digital models was 0.23 ± 0.14 and 0.24 ± 0.11 for each examiner, respectively. When the two types of measurements were compared, the values obtained from the digital models were lower than those obtained from the plaster models (p < 0.05), although the differences were considered clinically insignificant (differences < 0.1 mm). The Cécile digital models are a clinically acceptable alternative for use in Orthodontics.

ResumoIntrodução: Pesquisas por métodos biométricos auxiliares em perícias têm crescido na Odontologia Legal. Objetivo: Este estudo avaliou a eficácia da rugoscopia palatina na identificação humana. Material e método: Foram utilizados 184 modelos de gesso de estudantes voluntários em Niterói-RJ, para delineamento de suas rugosidades palatinas, sendo classificadas segundo quantidade, direção (sistema de Carrea) e formato individual (sistema de Silva), e comparadas às variáveis demográficas sexo, cor da pele e idade. A análise estatística foi realizada com o teste qui-quadrado para amostras independentes, considerando-se p<0,05. Resultado: Houve maior prevalência de 2-7 rugas em homens. O tipo IV de Carrea e o tipo 1 de Silva foram mais evidentes, porém sem diferenças intergrupos significativas, de acordo com as variáveis propostas. Conclusão: A rugoscopia palatina é uma ferramenta biométrica viável e fornece informações morfológicas individuais relevantes, embora sua análise cega e em tempo único não exiba acurácia na estratificação populacional.Descritores: Odontologia Forense; palato duro; identificação biométrica. AbstractIntroduction: Researches by auxiliary biometric methods for skills have grown in Forensic Dentistry. Objective: This study evaluated the effectiveness of palatal rugoscopy in human identification. Material and method: They were used 184 plaster models of students volunteers in Niterói, RJ, performing the design of their palatal rugae sorted by amount, direction (Carrea's pattern) and individual format (Silva's pattern) and compared to the demographic variables gender, skin color and age. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-square test for independent samples and considering p<0.05. Result: There was a higher prevalence of 2-7 rugae in men. Carrea's pattern IV and Silva's pattern 1 were evident, but no significant intergroup differences in accord to the proposed variables. Conclusion:The palatal rugoscopy is a practicable biometric tool and it provides relevant individual morphological information, although its blind and one-time analysis not displays accurancy in population stratification.

Dimensional Stability of Alginates Molds Tridimentionally Scanned

Alginate is among the most used materials in dentistry to create teeth negative printing and reproduction. The goal of this study was to compare dimensional changes of alginate scanned impression materials. Thirty impressions of a standard typodont were performed using three types of alginate (Hydrogum 5; Jeltrate Plus and Avagel). The impressions were scanned by the scanner 3Shape R700T and scans were performed immediately after molding. The analysis of digital models were performed at OrthoAnalyzer ™ 3D software. Measurements were carried out in relation to the transverse dimension (intercanine, interpremolares and intermolar). Method error was evaluated through the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman. One-way ANOVA, Dunnet Post-test were used to compare the different groups in relation to Typodont (gold standard) for the different outcome variables. The data were tabulated in Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 20.0 and Minitab 17.0 softwares to compare groups. The significance level was 5%. The posterior transverse variables (D1PM, D2PM and DM) presented a statistically significant difference regarding the gold standard (Typodont) for the plaster models performed after the Avagel molding. In the digital models performed just after molding, only in DM, the Avagel material group presented values statistically higher than the control group. The alginates Hydrogum 5 and Jeltrate Plus presented dimensions closer to the gold standard.Keywords: Dental Impression Materials. Dental Models. Imaging, Three-Dimensional. Resumo O alginato está entre os materiais de moldagem mais utilizados na Odontologia para criar impressão e reprodução negativa dos dentes. O objetivo desse trabalho foi comparar alterações transversais de três marcas comerciais de alginato (Hydrogum, Jeltrate e Avagel) em moldes de alginatos. Trinta moldes de um Typodont padrão foram realizados, utilizando três tipos de alginato (Hydrogum 5; Jeltrate Plus e Avagel). Os moldes foram escaneados por meio do scanner 3Shape R700T e os escaneamentos realizados logo após a moldagem e logo após a obtenção dos modelos de gesso.
