High levels of genetic differentiation and selfing in the Brazilian cerrado fruit tree Dipteryx alata Vog. (Fabaceae)

Abstract: Dipteryx alata is a native fruit tree species of the cerrado (Brazilian savanna) that has great economic potential because of its multiple uses. Knowledge of how the genetic variability of this species is organized within and among populations would be useful for genetic conservation and breeding programs. We used nine simple sequence repeat (SSR) primers developed for Dipteryx odorata to evaluate the genetic structure of three populations of D. alata located in central Brazil based on a leaf sample analysis f… Show more

“…Numerous studies on the genetic conservation of native Cerrado plant species have been carried out, analyzing these populations using microsatellite molecular markers (Zucchi et al, 2003;Moura et al, 2009;Collevatti et al, 2010;Tarazi et al, 2010). This technique is widely used because it is codominant, highly polymorphic and informative (Tautz, 1989;Guichoux et al, 2011).…”

“…In the last decade, several studies have evaluated the genetic structure in Cerrado plant species (Zucchi et al, 2003;Soares et al, 2008;Moreno et al, 2009;Collevatti et al, 2001Collevatti et al, , 2010Telles et al, 2003Telles et al, , 2010Tarazi et al, 2010;Martins et al, 2006Martins et al, , 2011Moura et al, 2009Moura et al, , 2011Moraes and Sebbenn, 2011). Most of them addressed the genetic diversity and population differentiation, aiming to determine the conservation status of natural populations, which would then make it possible to infer historical events related to anthropogenic disturbance, gene flow between populations and the effect of ecosystem fragmentation.…”
