The availability of dense genomic information has increased genome-wide association studies for the bovine species; however research to assess the effect of single genes on production traits is still important to elucidate the genes functions. On this study the association of IGF1, GH, and PIT1 markers with growth and reproductive traits (birth weight, weaning weight, weight at 12 and 18 months of age, preweaning average daily weight gain, age and weight at first calving, and scrotal circumference at 12 and 18 months of age) were assessed by means of the variance component approach. The phenotypes were adjusted and then analyzed under two animal models, one which considered the polygenic and genotype (IGF1, GH or PIT1 markers) effects (Model 1), and the other which considers only the polygenic effect (Model 2). When the likelihood ratio test and the Bonferroni correction was applied at 5 % significance level, the genetic markers for the IGF1, GH, and PIT1 genes did not influence significantly the traits (p > 0.002). However, evidence of association of IGF1 with birth weight (p = 0.06) and GH with weight at first calving (p = 0.03) and with weight at 12 months of age (p = 0.08) was observed. In conclusion we could not confirm the associations between IGF1, GH, and PIT1 and growth traits that were previously reported in Canchim cattle, and no association was observed between these genes and reproductive traits. Future studies involving functional markers of IGF1, GH and PIT1 genes may help to clarify the role of these genes in growth and reproductive processes.

Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar parâmetros genéticos para idades ao primeiro (IPP) e segundo partos (ISP), idades ao primeiro (IPP PEN ) e segundo partos penalizadas (ISP PEN ), e a ocorrência de parto até os 38 meses de idade (PP 38 ), em bovinos da raça Canchim, bem como estimar as relações genéticas entre essas características e o peso (PE 420 ) de machos e femêas e a circunferência escrotal (CE 420 ) de novilhos, medidos aos 420 dias de idade. Foram estimados parâmetros genéticos em análises bicaracterísticas, por meio de inferência bayesiana. As análises foram realizadas entre CE 420 e PE 420 e as características reprodutivas medidas em fêmeas. As características reprodutivas das fêmeas devem apresentar baixa resposta à seleção, e mudanças no manejo e nas condições ambientais melhoram tais características. A seleção quanto ao maior peso aos 420 dias de idade não deve provocar mudanças nas características reprodutivas em fêmeas, enquanto a seleção para o aumento da circunferência escrotal, na mesma idade, contribui para melhorar tais características.Termo para indexação: bovinos de corte, circunferência escrotal, idade ao parto, ocorrência de parição, peso. Genetic parameters were estimated by two-trait analyses using the Bayesian inference. The analyses were performed between CE 420 and PE 420 , and the reproductive traits measured in the females. The female reproductive traits should show low response to selection, and changes in the management and environmental conditions improve these traits. Selection for the higher weight at 420 days of age does not change female reproductive traits, while selection to increase scrotal circumference, at the same age, contributes to improve such traits.

Reproductive Traits Selection in Nelore Beef Cattle

Genetic breeding programs of beef cattle in Brazil are including new features, mainly related to reproductive efficiency. Thus, it is necessary to study the effectiveness of selection and quantify genetic gain for these traits in herds. This study estimated genetic and phenotypic parameters and genetic trends for reproductive traits used in breeding programs for Nelore beef cattle. The traits studied were the scrotal circumference (SC) at 365 and 450 days of age (SC365 and SC450), age at first calving (AFC) and gestation length, as a cow trait (GLcow) and a calf trait (GLcalf). The (co)variance components were obtained with the Restricted Maximum Likelihood Methodology in a single and double-trait analysis of the animal model. For scrotal circumference (SC365 and SC450), positive and favorable genetic gains were observed. For AFC, GLcow and GLcalf, the trends were favorable for selection, but without significant genetic gain. Selection for large SC may reduce AFC and improve female reproductive efficiency. The selection for reproductive traits (SC365, SC450, AFC and GL) may improve reproductive and productive efficiency of Nelore cattle, if used as a selection criterion.Index terms: Reproductive efficiency; genetic evaluation; precocity. RESUMOOs programas de avaliação genética de bovinos de corte, no Brasil, estão incluindo novas características, principalmente as ligadas à eficiência reprodutiva. Dessa forma, faz-se necessário estudar a efetividade da seleção e quantificar ganho genético para estas características nos rebanhos selecionados. Objetivou-se, neste estudo, estimar parâmetros genéticos e fenotípicos e tendências genéticas para características reprodutivas utilizadas em programas de avaliação genética de bovinos de corte da raça Nelore. As características estudadas foram o perímetro escrotal aos 365 e 450 dias de idade (PE365 e PE450), idade ao primeiro parto (IPP), período de gestação considerada como característica da vaca (PGvaca) e do bezerro (PGbez). Os componentes de (co) variância foram obtidos pelo Método de Máxima Verossimilhança Restrita em análises uni e bi-características, sob o modelo animal. Para o perímetro escrotal (PE365 e PE450), foi observado ganho genético positivo e favorável. Para IPP, PGvaca e PGbez as tendências foram no sentido favorável da seleção, porém sem ganho genético significativo. A seleção para maior perímetro escrotal pode reduzir a IPP e melhorar a eficiência reprodutiva das fêmeas. A seleção para características reprodutivas (PE365, PE450, IPP e PG) pode melhorar a eficiência reprodutiva e produtiva do rebanho, se forem usadas como critérios de seleção para bovinos da raça Nelore.Termos para indexação: Eficiência reprodutiva; avaliação genética; precocidade.
