ABSTRACT.A large herd of Nellore cattle was evaluated using indepth pedigree analyses. Taking into account the incomplete pedigree due to the use of multiple young sires for mating, the average inbreeding coefficient was calculated as 1.73% for the last generation, which was higher than the regular inbreeding coefficient (0.25%). The effective population size was estimated to be 114, 245, and 101 for the time periods 1995-1999, 1999-2003, and 2003-2007, respectively. Parameters based on the probability of gene origin were used to describe the genetic diversity over time in the herd. The effective number of founders, ancestors, and founder genomes decreased over time, showing an overall loss of genetic diversity. In the last five-year period (2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007), based on available pedigree information, one prominent ancestor contributed 10.6% to the gene pool of the herd, and 30% of this pool was contributed by 31 ancestors. The analysis of inbreeding under random mating indicated that the mating strategies used in the herd are slowing down inbreeding rates. “…When the results obtained in the present study were analyzed, it was observed that, although numerically higher in the Nelore bulls, there were no statistically significant differences in any of the evaluated parameters between this breed and the Polled Nelore breed. Such similarity between the Polled Nelore and Nelore breeds could be explained by the facts that the first breed arose as a variety of the second, according to the genealogical records beginning in 1969 (Santos 1998), and the low magnitude of the genetic distance between these two breeds (Vozzi et al 2006). Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a variabilidade genética da raça Brahman no Brasil, por meio da análise de 15.851 pedigrees. O arquivo de dados foi dividido em dois períodos : 1998-2001 e 2002-2005. A variabilidade genética foi avaliada por parâmetros baseados na probabilidade de origem do gene: número efetivo de ancestrais, número efetivo de fundadores, número efetivo de genomas remanescentes e coeficientes de parentesco e de endogamia. Os valores encontrados quanto ao número de fundadores mostraram que a população está em expansão, embora o número efetivo de fundadores tenha diminuído de um período para outro. Os resultados foram diferentes em relação ao número de ancestrais e genomas remanescentes, que apresentaram crescimento de 23% nos períodos avaliados. O coeficiente de endogamia diminuiu nos períodos estudados, porém o coeficiente de parentesco "inter se" cresceu. Poucos ancestrais apresentaram grande contribuição genética para a população, o que evidencia a utilização de poucos indivíduos na reprodução. A raça Brahman, no Brasil, encontra-se em expansão, caracterizada pela diminuição do coeficiente de endogamia e aumento nos números efetivos de fundadores e de genótipos remanescentes.
