Morphological and Genetic Diversity of the Wood-Boring Xylophaga (Mollusca, Bivalvia): New Species and Records from Deep-Sea Iberian Canyons

Deep-sea bivalves of the Xylophagaidae, a poorly known group, are obligate wood-borers. Deployment of wood in three submarine canyons off the Iberian coast, the Blanes and La Fonera Canyons (Mediterranean Sea) and the Avilés Canyon (Cantabric Sea, Bay of Biscay), lead to the discovery of four xylophagaid species in our samples. Xylophaga dorsalis (the dominant species), X. atlantica, X. cf. anselli and the new species X. brava, were identified on the basis of morphological data, and supported by a phylogenetic reconstruction based on the nuclear genes 18S rDNA and 28S rDNA and including several genus of Xylophagaidae. Genetic divergence between species of Xylophaga varied between genes, ranging from 0.5 to 4.0% for the 18SrDNA and from 4.1 to 16.6% for the 28SrDNA. Xylophaga brava sp. nov. appeared to be restricted to the Mediterranean and morphologically resembled the closely related X. cf. anselli from the Cantabrian Sea. However, they clearly diverged in two well-supported clades. Low levels of intraspecific variability and higher interspecific divergence between species also supported the existence of these two different species. Morphologically they differ in the number of cirri at the siphon openings, in the shape of the posterior shell and in the size of prodissoconch II. The new species is characterized by having weak, poorly mineralized mesoplax and siphons united throughout, covered by a periostracal, non-calcified tube; distinct proximal and distal siphons, the former translucent and soft, the latter muscular, with concentric rings. Xylophaga atlantica, previously known only from the western Atlantic, is reported for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea. Whether its presence in the Mediterranean indicates its natural distribution or reflects its recent introduction is unknown. Although xylophagaids have been previously reported to recruit heavily to wood deposited on the seabed, these four species colonized wood suspended 30 m above the seafloor.

Nutrition in the Teredinidae family of wood-boring mollusks is sustained by cellulolytic/nitrogen fixing symbiotic bacteria of the Teredinibacter clade. The mangrove Teredinidae Neoteredo reynei is popularly used in the treatment of infectious diseases in the north of Brazil. In the present work, the symbionts of N. reynei, which are strictly confined to the host's gills, were conclusively identified as Teredinibacter turnerae. Symbiont variants obtained in vitro were able to grow using casein as the sole carbon/nitrogen source and under reduced concentrations of NaCl. Furthermore, cellulose consumption in T. turnerae was clearly reduced under low salt concentrations. As a point of interest, we hereby report first hand that T. turnerae in fact exerts antibiotic activity. Furthermore, this activity was also affected by NaCl concentration. Finally, T. turnerae was able to inhibit the growth of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, this including strains of Sphingomonas sp., Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus sciuri. Our findings introduce new points of view on the ecology of T. turnerae, and suggest new biotechnological applications for this marine bacterium.

Esse artigo objetivou realizar a compilação das publicações relacionadas a bioderetioração da madeira em ambiente marinho no Brasil até 2019, apresentando uma revisão bibliométrica e o estado da arte sobre este tema. A pesquisa foi realizada utilizando três bases de dados: Scielo, Web of Science e Scopus. Os artigos passaram por uma triagem resultando em 17 documentos. Os principais parâmetros de avaliação foram as instituições que contribuíram para a pesquisa; distribuição das publicações ao longo dos anos; objetivo da pesquisa; e se o tema tecnologia da madeira foi abordado. O primeiro registro de publicações com brocas marinhas no Brasil foi na década de 1980, mas não houve um aumento de produção científica ao longo dos anos. Além disso, nenhum dos estudos avaliados teve a biodeterioração e preservação da madeira como foco, sendo mais direcionados para tópicos como ecologia, fisiologia e taxonomia dos xilófagos marinhos. Existe a necessidade estimular pesquisas voltadas para a biodeterioração e preservação da madeira relacionadas a brocas marinhas, tendo em vista a lacuna de estudos com esse tema, bem como a importância desses organismos no âmbito ambiental e econômico. Marine borers and wood biodeterioration in Brazil: a systematic review ABSTRACT: This paper aims to carry out a compilation of publications on wood biodeterioration by marine borers in Brazil until 2019. It presents a bibliometric review and offers the state of the art on the subject. The research was carried out in three databases: Scielo, Web of Science and Scopus. The articles were screened resulting in 17 documents. The main evaluation parameters were the institutions that contributed to the research; distribution of publications over the years; aims; and if the subject wood technology was addressed. The analysis suggests that the first record on the subject dates from the 1980s, but there is no increase of studies published over the years. In addition, none of the studies focus on wood biodeterioration and preservation, being more directed towards topics such as ecology, physiology, and taxonomy of marine xylophages. There is a need to encourage research focused on wood biodeterioration and preservation related to marine borers, given the lack of studies on this topic, as well as the importance of these organisms in the environmental and economic sphere.
