Normal microspore production after cell fusion in Brachiaria jubata (Gramineae)

Abstract: Cytogenetic studies were carried out on 22 accessions of Brachiaria jubata from the Embrapa Beef Cattle Brachiaria collection. One accession was diploid (2n = 2x = 18) and the remaining 21 were tetraploid (2n = 4x = 36). Among five tetraploid accessions, a specific and constant pattern of cell fusion involving only two microsporocytes was recorded. Meiosis proceeded normally from prophase I to the end, giving rise to an octad with normal microspores that developed into fertile pollen grains. Regular octad form… Show more

“…Also this low temperature stress conditions prevailing in the presently investigated area might lead the amalgamation of PMCs and pollen grains. These syncyte PMCs have earlier recorded in Brachiaria jubata [45], Chrysanthemum [46], and Lindelofia longifolia var. falconeri [47].…”

“…Syncyte formation has been recorded from Fabaceae (Sarbhoy 1980), Poaceae (Levan 1941;Caetano-Pereira et al 1999;Mendes-Bonato et al 2003;Boldrini et al 2006), and Solanaceae (Padmaja 1988) and thus may be a common phenomenon in angiosperms. Nevertheless, it is not reported as frequently as gametic non-reduction.…”

“…Since the first report of syncyte formation through cell fusion in Lactuca sativa L. by Gates & Rees (1921), a number of cases have been reported (Levan, 1941; Price, 1956; Katayama, 1964; Mehra & Kalia, 1973; Sarbhoy, 1980; Padmaja, 1988; Caetano‐Pereira et al, 1999; Mendes‐Bonato et al, 2001, 2003; Boldrini et al, 2006; Risso‐Pascotto et al, 2006; Singhal & Kumar, 2008; Kim et al, 2009; Kumar et al, 2010, 2011). We here record for the first time the formation of syncytes and consequently 2 n or double‐sized pollen grains in the accession of L. longiflora var.…”
