The parametric restrictions of the Gardner and Eberhart diallel analysis model: heterosis analysis

Abstract: It was studied the parametric restrictions of the diallel analysis model of Griffing, method 2 (parents and F1 generations) and model 1 (fixed), in order to address the questions: i) does the statistical model need to be restricted? ii) do the restrictions satisfy the genetic parameter values? and iii) do they make the analysis and interpretation easier? Objectively, these questions can be answered as: i) yes, ii) not all of them, and iii) the analysis is easier, but the interpretation is the same as in the mo… Show more

“…Para cada geração, estimou-se o valor da heterose (H) pelo contraste entre a média ajustada do cruzamento e de seus genitores (Viana, 2000(Viana, , 2007. A variância de cada estimativa de H foi calculada, tendo-se considerado as variâncias e covariâncias das médias de genitores e cruzamentos envolvidos, presentes na matriz de variância das médias ajustadas.…”

“…Griffing's methodology is certainly the most frequently used, because its analysis is easy to perform and to interpret. Gardner and Eberhart's method gives the same information as Griffing's (Cruz and Vencovsky, 1989;Viana, 2000a). Hayman's method is the most complex to understand and to interpret, specifically for homozygous populations.…”

“…Note: the word "variety" is used instead of cultivar or genotype because it is specific to the G&EII and G&EIII methods. Variance estimates were obtained for G&EII and G&EIII by use of formulas provided by José Marcelo Soriano Viana (personal communication, Feb. 17-18, 2013) and from his paper (Viana, 2000). “…Diallel data were analyzed via DIALLEL-SAS05 developed by Zhang et al (2005). Variance estimates were obtained for G&EII and G&EIII by use of formulas provided by José Marcelo Soriano Viana (personal communication, Feb. 17-18, 2013) and from his paper (Viana, 2000). All analyses were done using SAS 9.2 (SAS Institute, 2005).…”
