Analysis of general and specific combining abilities of popcorn populations, including selfed parents

Abstract: Estimation of general and specific combining ability effects in a diallel analysis of cross-pollinating populations, including the selfed parents, is presented in this work. The restrictions considered satisfy the parametric values of the GCA and SCA effects. The method is extended to self-pollinating populations (suitable for other species, without the selfed parents). The analysis of changes in population means due to inbreeding (sensitivity to inbreeding) also permits to assess the predominant direction of … Show more

“…For popping expansion, the Ŝ ii values were positive and negative in the two growing seasons, which is evidence of the existence of bidirectional dominance on the expression of this trait. Similar results were obtained by Larish and Brewbaker (1999), Scapim et al (2002), Vilarinho et al (2002), and Viana and Matta (2003).…”

“…Regarding the popping expansion, the mean squares were not significant (at 5% probability), unlike the mean squares of the variety and specific heterosis. This fact confirms the existence of bidirectional dominance on expression, in accordance with Larish and Brewbaker (1999), Scapim et al (2002), Vilarinho et al (2002Vilarinho et al ( , 2003, and Viana and Matta (2003).…”

“…Therefore, additive effects were predominant for PE, although several researchers have reported the presence of bi-directional dominance (Andrade et al, 2002;Viana and Matta, 2003;Simon et al, 2004;Freitas Júnior et al, 2006;Scapim et al, 2006;Miranda et al, 2008). “…Plant breeders generally strive to identify elite parents of germplasm to be combined well and produce productive progenies (Viana & Matta, 2003), maize breeder in Iraq has used sophisticated methodologies to achieve gene pool improvement throughout useful sources of variation for yield potential, heterotic patterns and biotic and abiotic resistance (Badu-Apraku et al, 2013;Yousif, 2001;Yousif et al, 2003). The success of identifying such parents mainly depends on the gene action that controls the trait under improvement (Brown, 1960;Vasal et al, 1993;Wellhausen, 1965).…”
