Chromosome numbers for Anthurium and Philodendron spp. (Araceae) occurring in Bahia, Brazil

Abstract: Chromosome numbers for four species of Anthurium and four species of Philodendron from Bahia, Brazil, were determined. New counts 2n = 30 for A. longipes and A. affine, 2n = 32 for P. pedatum and 2n = 34 P. blanchetianum and P. pachyphyllum represent the first reports for these species. The 2n = 32 found for P. imbe and 2n = 90 for A. bellum differ from earlier reports, whereas 2n = 30 and 60 for A. pentaphyllum var. pentaphyllum confirms previous counts. A. affine had one to four B-chromosomes. We suggest sec… Show more

“…Of the seven species analyzed here, our results confirmed previous counts for A. pentaphyllum with 2 n = 30 and 60 (Cotias-de-Oliveira et al , 1999), A. gracile with 2 n = 30 and 40 (Sheffer and Kamemoto, 1976; Guerra, 1986b), and A. gladiifolium and A. affine with 2 n = 30 (Sheffer and Kamemoto, 1976; Carvalheira et al , 1991; Cotias-de-Oliveira et al , 1999). The counts for A. jilekii and A. petrophilum , both with 2 n = 30, are new.…”

“…Of the 153 species of the genus Anthurium with known chromosome numbers, B chromosomes have been identified in 20 (approximately 13%). Among the species found to have B chromosomes, there are records for A. affine (Cotias-de-Oliveira et al , 1999) and the new occurrences in A. gladiifolium (30+3Bs) and A. petrophilum (30+1B). However, the occurrence of B chromosomes in the genus may be underestimated, whereas the numbers of B chromosomes may have been interpreted as intraspecific disploidy variation in chromosome numbers.…”

“…Of the species we sampled, recent cytogenetic analyses report supernumerary chromosomes exclusively in species assigned to sections Calomystrium, Cardiolonchium, Porphyrochitonium and Pachyneurium (Fig. 1) (Sharma and Bhattacharyya 1961; Sheffer and Kamemoto 1976; Sheffer and Croat 1983; Marutani et al 1993; Cotias-de-Oliveira et al 1999). …”

“…Schott, 1829 and P. imbe Schott, 1829, heating is weak and apparently unregulated (RS Seymour and P Schultze-Motel, unpublished data). It has been suggested that the differences may lie in the fact that P. selloum and P. solimoesense belong to the subgenus Meconostigma, while the others are members of the subgenus Philodendron (Cotias-de- Oliveira et al, 1999;Barabe and Lacroix, 2001; Barabé et al, 2002), which apparently is a more derived group (Mayo, 1988).…”
