Applicability of Moringa oleifera Lam. pie as an adsorbent for removal of heavy metals from waters

Abstract: This study evaluated the efficacy of moringa seeds (Moringa oleifera Lam.) as an adsorbent material for removing toxic heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, and chromium from contaminated solutions. The effect of the adsorbent mass was investigated at two pH conditions (5.0 and 7.0). The optimized conditions were 0.300 g of adsorbent at pH 5.0, used for the isotherms construction, and linearized according to Langmuir and Freundlich models. Results showed that cadmium adsorption was similar in both the models use… Show more

“…Table 3 shows the parameters of Langmuir and Freundlich models obtained and the correlation coefficients of adsorption data. The experimental results of Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, and Se adsorption on the banana, potato, orange, onion, opuntia, and pomegranate comply with the Freundlich isotherm model according to R 2 studied [ 52 ]. The model that best fitted for metal adsorption was Freundlich, indicating that the adsorption occurred in multiple layers [ 52 ].…”

“…The calculated parameters for the Langmuir and Freundlich models are shown in Table 3 , along with the correlation coefficients for the adsorption data. According to the experimental results of Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, and Se adsorption on the iron nanoparticles of banana, potato, orange, onion, opuntia, and pomegranate, the adsorption took place in multiple layers and was consistent with the Freundlich isotherm model [ 52 ]. The metals Cu, Cr, Se, and Zn have higher adsorption capacities (q m ) and the highest binding energies with the adsorbent in the Langmuir linearization.…”

“…The Langmuir isotherm model better describes the experimental data of Co(II) ion biosorption on algal biomass, which is verified by the high value of determination coefficient (R 2 = 0.984; Figure 7A, Table 3), confirming that the biosorption process occurred in a monolayer manner. It indicates that the biosorption rate of cobalt is relatively high [51]. Langmuir linearization confirmed that P. pavonica biomass had a maximum biosorption capacity (q max = 17.98 mg/g).…”

“…Estudos anteriores demonstraram eficiência na utilização de "bolos" de M. oleifera (obtidos pelo mascaramento das sementes e sucessivas secagem do material a fim de obter um material com consistência de pasta) na absorção de diferentes tipos de metais em água, incluindo chumbo (GONÇALVES JUNIOR et al, 2013). Porém pouco se sabe se um resultado semelhante pode ser obtido pela utilização de cascas das sementes que são comumente descartadas.…”
