Objective: To contribute to the development of prevention tools by identifying the pattern of tobacco use, knowledge about tobacco-related diseases and media tools that are popular among adolescents. Material and Method:In a cross-sectional study, sixty adolescents (41.7% smokers, 28.3% ex-smokers and 30% never smokers) attending the secondary level of a public school (Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil) were interviewed using a standardized questionnaire. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was applied to all subjects. The Fagerström score and motivation to give up smoking (Prochaska e DiClemente) were evaluated in smokers.Results: The mean age was 15.8 ± 1.1 years old, and 65% were female. Among the smokers, 60% were girls and among ex-smokers, 59%. A high proportion of smokers and ex-smokers had used alternative forms of tobacco such as narghile (52.4%) and flavored cigarettes (54.8%). A very low proportion of the adolescents associated smoking with cardiovascular disease (1.7%), neurological problems (1.7%), heart disease (5%), dental problems (5%), skin aging (5%) and even cancer (36.7%). The majority of smokers (96%) and ex-smokers (88.2%) had low nicotine dependence, 76.1% of them did not consider themselves addicted to nicotine and stated that they could stop whenever they wanted. Internet accessed by computer was the favorite media tool for 58.3% of the adolescents. Conclusions:Use of alternative forms of smoking is high, and the knowledge about the consequences of any tobacco consumption is very poor and sometimes misleading among adolescents. Our data indicate that personalized internet tools should be developed to gain the interest of adolescents in smoking prevention and cessation.

ResumoIntrodução: O estudo versa sobre a experiência de acadêmicos de medicina ao ministrarem palestras na integração de conhecimentos adquiridos e sua contribuição social, cujo tema central de abordagem foi "Drogas na Adolescência". Objetivo: relatar a experiência de estudantes de medicina do terceiro período na condução de palestras para adolescentes em escolas de ensino fundamental e médio, com a abordagem temática "Drogas na adolescência, comprometimento biopsicossocial e o papel do médico em escolas". Material e Método: Relato de experiência, elaborado com base nas experiências compartilhadas em palestras ministradas aos adolescentes de ensino fundamental e médio do sul de Minas Gerais. Resultado: A aproximação do universo adolescente possibilita conhecer o quanto eles são suscetíveis ao meio, e como eles enfrentam suas inquietações sobre a temática. Poucos são os que participam integralmente, outra parcela sente-se desafiado ou mesmo violados quando sujeitos a receberem informações que a princípio julga saber tudo. Conclusão: As escolas possuem um papel fundamental na formação dos jovens, acredita-se que se possibilitarem o trabalho conjunto de outros profissionais de áreas afins para auxiliar e discutir os aspectos da drogadição, bem como, seus malefícios poderá ser o caminho para a redução do uso das drogas (lícito-ilícitas), com a orientação informa-se, conscientiza-se e garante a saúde integral dos adolescentes, sem prejuízos na fase adulta e para a sociedade. AbstractIntroduction: The study deals with the experience of medical academics when they lecture on the integration of acquired knowledge and their social contribution, whose main theme was "Drugs in Adolescence". Objective: To report the experience of medical students of the third period in conducting lectures for adolescents in primary and secondary schools, with the thematic approach "Drugs in adolescence, biopsychosocial commitment and the role of the doctor in schools". Material and Method: Report of experience, elaborated based on the experiences shared in lectures given to the adolescents of primary and secondary education in the south of Minas Gerais. Result: The approach of the adolescent universe makes it possible to know how susceptible they are to the environment, and how they face their concerns about the subject. Few are those who participate fully, another portion feels challenged or even violated when subjected to receiving information that at first judges to know everything. Conclusion: Schools have a fundamental role in the training of young people. It is believed that it will be possible to work together with other professionals in related fields to help and discuss aspects of drug addiction, as well as their Use of drugs (licit-illicit), with the guidance informs, is aware of and guarantees the integral health of adolescents, without harm in adulthood and society.

Objective: To identify factors associated with smoking initiation in adolescent secondary school students. Method: This is a cross-sectional study conducted in 2014 with 864 adolescents at a secondary school in southern Brazil. Data were collected using an instrument with sociodemographic questions, application of the Fagerström Nicotine Dependence Scale, and Beck Depression Inventory, and analysed using descriptive statistics, Fisher's Exact test, Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney's test, and the Poisson Regression test.Results: Fifty-four of the adolescents started smoking, of which 35 continued smoking and exhibited high nicotine dependence. Smoking was associated with brown skin (p = 0.020), single-parent household (p = 0.006), a fair family relationship (p = 0.003), and drug users in the family (p = 0.04). A significantly higher prevalence ratio was detected for boys (p = 0.038), higher family income (p> 0.001), living with one family member (p> 0.001), and a fair family relationship (p> 0.001). Conclusions:We identified factors associated with smoking initiation, revealing the importance of supporting health education strategies to change this reality. Resultados: Cinquenta e quatro adolescentes iniciaram o comportamento tabágico, desses 35 continuam fumando, com elevada dependência de nicotina. Estiveram associados ao tabagismo: cor parda (p=0,020), famílias monoparentais (p=0,006), regular relação familiar (p=0,003) e familiares usuários de drogas (p=0,04). Apresentaram razão de prevalência significativamente maior: masculino (p=0,038), maior renda familiar (p>0,001), morar com um membro da família (p>0,001), relação familiar regular (p>0,001). Keywords Conclusões:Os fatores identificados como associados à iniciação tabágica, demonstram que existe a necessidade de construir apoio para estratégias de educação em saúde a fim de mudar esta realidade. Recoge instrumento con preguntas sociodemográficas, aplicando el test de Fagerström Inventario de Depresión de Beck, analizados por estadística descriptiva, prueba exacta de Fisher, Chi-cuadrado, Mann-Whitney, T y de regresión de Poisson.Resultados: Cincuenta y cuatro comenzaron el hábito de fumar, entre ellos, 35 permanecen fumando, con una alta dependencia de la nicotina. Se asociaron con el hábito de fumar personas pardas (p = 0,020), los padres solteros (p = 0,006), relación regular de la familia (p = 0,003) y los usuarios de drogas de la familia (p = 0,04). Ellos tenían significativamente más alta razón de prevalencia: masculino (p = 0,038), mayor ingreso familiar (p> 0,001), que viven con un miembro de la familia (p> 0,001), relación familiar normal (p> 0,001).
