Sapajus apella is a Neotropical primate, commonly known as robust brown capuchin monkey. It belongs to the family Cebidae, which has two genera, such as Sapajus and Cebus. 1 The former comprises the most robust capuchins, and the latter consists of smaller-sized capuchins. 2 S. apella is distributed in South America, with the majority of the population in Brazil. It has a coat that varies between yellow and brown color. 3,4 The S. apella is considered a small primate, weighing between five and six kilogrames, 3,5 a characteristic that makes it easy-to-handle for laboratory work. In addition, it has the capacity to adapt to closed spaces and reproduce relatively easy in captivity. 5 Its diet is based on fruits, seeds, flowers, and insects, 3 for which it has developed an arboreal locomotion with terrestrial capacities.It is thought to spend 40% of its time in quadrupedal locomotion, and the remaining 60%, in arboreal habitats, mainly with climbing movements in trees and jumping between branches. 6 This species is one of the platyrrhine primates with the most remarkable cognitive abilities, 7 as it can handle tools due to, even with intermittent bipedalism. 8 Despite these locomotor skills, the anatomy involved in its different types of locomotion has not been described, particularly the extrinsic thoracic limb and brachial muscles. This study aimed to describe the gross anatomy of the ventral rami of the thoracic spinal nerves in capuchin monkey (Sapajus apella) and compare with humans and other primate species. Eight specimens, prepared in 10% formalin solution and dissected following routine standard techniques, were used. The animals presented 13–14 pairs of thoracic spinal nerves emerging from the intervertebral foramen and divided into dorsal and ventral rami. The ventral rami of the first 12 or 13 pairs represented intercostal nerves and the latter referred to the subcostal nerve. The intercostal and subcostal nerves gave off muscular and cutaneous branches (lateral and ventral), which promote innervation of muscles and skin associated with the chest and abdominal wall. Atypical anatomy was verified for the 1st, 2nd and 7th to 13th intercostal nerves as well as for the subcostal nerve. The morphological characteristics were similar to those observed in humans and some non‐human primates, especially in the absence of collateral branches.

The aim of this study was to describe the anatomy of the great vessels of the heart in capuchin monkey (Cebus apella) and to compare with those of other primates, including humans. The hearts were prepared through fixation in 10% formalin and subsequently dissected using standard techniques and instruments. The arterial and venous systems were perfused with colored latex solution via the femoral vessels. An ascending cylindrical branch with relatively great caliber was identified in the aorta artery, in addition to an aortic arch, from which three great arteries were originated, the brachiocephalic trunk, the left common carotid artery and the left subclavian artery. After a course of variable extension, the pulmonary trunk divided into right and left pulmonary arteries. The caudal vena cava was morphologically similar to that of humans, except for its association with the cardiac lobe of the right lung, whereas the cranial vena cava was formed by the two braquiocephalic veins and received the azygos vein close to right atrium. The pulmonary veins, in number of six, ended at the posterior face of the left atrium, differently from both humans and other primates. In conclusion, the morphology of the great vessels of the heart in Cebus apella was similar to that of humans and other primates, although some differences are evidenced with regards to topography and number of anatomic structures, particularly the relationship of the caudal vena cava with the cardiac lobe of the right lung and the presence of six pulmonary veins in Cebus apella.
