Mycobacterium aurum keratitis: an unusual etiology of a sight-threatening infection

Abstract: Atypical fast-growing Mycobacterium species are usually identified after laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, cosmetic surgeries, and catheter-related, pulmonary or soft tissue infections. We herein present the case of a 56-year-old man with purulent discharge, redness, and foreign body sensation in his left eye. He underwent two surgeries that partially controlled the infection but were not curative. Corneal transplantation was performed, and a biopsy of the excised cornea indicated Mycobacterium aurum infe… Show more

“…The fast-growing nature of M. fortuitum enables rapid data generation, and drug screening data have been used as a barometer of potential activity in M. tuberculosis (Renau et al 1995 , 1996 , Gillespie et al 2001 , 2005 ). Mycobacterium aurum is an RGM typically considered a commensal, although rare cases of infection in immunocompromised individuals have been reported (Honarvar et al 2012 ). Mycobacterium aurum has also been used as a surrogate for M. tuberculosis for in vitro drug screening of antimycobacterial compounds (Gupta et al 2009 , Gupta and Bhakta 2012 ).…”

“…The species has been associated with infections in immunocompromised patients (Esteban et al., 1998; Koranyi and Ranalli, 2003; Martín‐Aspas et al., 2008) and with keratitis (Honarvar et al., 2012) in reports using bacterial identification methods currently recognised to be prone to misidentifications of Mycobacterium species (Tortoli, 2014). No food‐borne origin could be established.…”
