Gene flow in agricultural crops is important for risk assessment of genetically modified (GM) crops, particularly in countries with a large informal agricultural sector of subsistence cultivation. We present a pollen flow model for maize (Zea mays), a major staple crop in Africa. We use spatial properties of fields (size, position) in three small-scale maize farming communities in Zambia and estimate rates of cross-fertilisation between fields sown with different maize varieties (e.g. conventional and transgene). As an additional factor contributing to gene flow, we present data on seed saving and sharing among farmers that live in the same communities. Our results show that: i) maize fields were small and located in immediate vicinity of neighboring fields; ii) a majority of farmers saved and shared seed; iii) modeled rates of pollen-mediated gene flow showed extensive mixing of germplasm between fields and farms and iv) as a result, segregation of GM and non-GM varieties is not likely to be an option in these systems. We conclude that the overall genetic composition of maize, in this and similar agricultural contexts, will be strongly influenced both by self-organised ecological factors (pollen flow), and by socially mediated intervention (seed recycling and sharing).

About 90% of the soy and corn planted area in Brazil is occupied by transgenic crops. The release of these crops was marked by legal disputes, conflicts and uncertainties. The study aims to present for analysis the approvals made by the National Technical Biosafety Commission for the commercialization of transgenic corn and soy seeds in Brazil until December 2022, and to elaborate some reflections that can be considered by the incoming government, in light of the application of the principle of precaution and the duties of the State to guarantee sovereignty and food security. A descriptive study, with a quantitative approach, was carried out using bibliographical and documentary research procedures, based on secondary data sources, obtained from publicly accessible portals. The results show that: the release of transgenics in Brazil continues to be questioned in court; only two companies hold the patent for 38 of the 74 authorized soy and corn events; the crops, mostly, have the characteristics of tolerance to herbicides and resistance to insects; there was no respect for the precautionary principle; sovereignty and food security are threatened, either by the monopoly of seeds or by conflicts between the food security law and releases based on substantial equivalence. For the Lula 3 government to defend the right to adequate food, it is urgent to initiate an agroecological transition

RESUMO Objetivamos discutir os principais argumentos que estão envolvidos no debate sobre a cientificidade do Princípio de Equivalência Substancial (PES), que afirma serem os OGM quimicamente equivalentes aos organismos selecionados pelas técnicas tradicionais de melhoramento, não requerendo, portanto, estudos toxicológicos adicionais. Problematizamos a cientificidade do PES, especialmente no que diz respeito à questão propriamente química. De fato, o PES estrutura-se conceitualmente na comparação quantitativa entre alguns componentes químico-biológicos da planta transgênica e os da não transgênica. Nesse sentido, as análises químicas propostas não conseguem relacionar sozinhas os possíveis efeitos bioquímicos, toxicológicos e imunológicos dos alimentos transgênicos, pois o princípio restringe as análises à composição química, molecular e analítica dos transgênicos. Emerge assim o problema do locus da incerteza científica, seja como questão epistemológica, seja como questão normativa e moral.
