This study intended to measure the scores of psych-emotional constructs and self-management in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), compare those scores according to the type of IBD, and verify the influence of these measures on self-management in health. This is a cross-sectional study performed at the outpatient clinic of a public Hospital. The patients were adults and diagnosed with IBD; they answered instruments of measure of selfesteem, anxiety and depression, health status and of activation. Pearson's correlation test and Student's t test evaluated the variables of interest. The level of significance was 0.05. We evaluated 65 patients (average age = 40.71; SD = 14.26). We found high score of activation (average = 57.5; SD = 13.38) and high score of self-esteem (average = 31.58; SD = 4.98), moderate score of anxiety (average = 8.24; SD = 4.38) and low score of depression (average = 5.47; SD = 3.53). Significant correlations were observed, from low to moderate magnitude, between the other measures and activation (p < 0.05). There were weak correlations between activation and time since diagnosis; anxiety and number of comorbidities (p < 0.05). We have concluded that patients with IBD presented high self-esteem, moderate levels of anxiety, low levels of depression and a high level of activation. Longer time since diagnosis was related with better self-management in health.

Introduction: Quality of life (QoL) of hemodialysis patients is a major evaluative marker currently measured, while treatment time is a clinical determinant associated with impaired QOL. Objective: To evaluate QOL in individuals undergoing hemodialysis (HD) considering treatment time and the presence of comorbidities. Methods: A cross-sectional study conducted in the hemodialysis unit of the Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (HC-UFPE). We studied patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) of both genders over the age of 18 years, at any level of education and undergoing HD for at least 6 months. We evaluated the demographic/socioeconomic and clinical data, followed by application of the quality of life questionnaire (KDQOL-SF). Results: Participants were 47 patients with a mean age of 50.94 ± 13.33 years, 55.3% were male and average treatment time of 57.35 ± 61.46 months. Hypertension (59.6%) was the most frequent underlying disease. According to the responses obtained through the KDQOL-SF, the situation at work and physical limitation scored worse. Sexual function (85.83) and encouragement by the team had the best performance. There were no differences in dimensions of questionnaire and treatment time. Conclusion: The presence of comorbidities and HD duration were not found to be possible factors for changing QoL in this study. However, we suggest that future studies evaluate other factors such as laboratory, emotional and functional data to check for changes in QoL in these patients related to HD duration.

The appearance of effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) has transformed the evolutionary profile of acquired human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) into a chronic disease, with increased life expectancy but complications related to its use, such as muscle weakness. Objective: Describe the occurrence of dynapenia and its relationship with quality of life in HIV infected individuals. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study, in which handgrip strength was evaluated with handgrip dynamometry. HIV-infected individuals aged ≥18 years and ability to have muscle strength measured were included. The diagnosis of dynapenia was determined by the literature for handgrip strength evaluation and body mass index (BMI). Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) was used to evaluate the quality of life, and other variables such as time to use ART and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), as well as age, gender and weight were recorded. Results: The presence of dynapenia was 11.6% in the sample studied. There was an association of dynapenia with the variables age (p = 0.0001), presence of cormobities (p = 0.0001), lower handgrip strength (p = 0.0001) and lower BMI (p = 0.033). The quality of life has been compromised in both the physical and mental domains. Conclusion: There is dynapenia in part of the individuals with HIV and its association with poorer quality of life was found, what suggests the necessity of screening and treatment of this often underreported health problem in this population.
