This study's objective was to analyze the factors determining active aging and its relationship to functional independence. It was conducted with a hundred elderly individuals cared for in a Family Health Unit in João Pessoa, PB, Brazil. The Functional Independence Measure and a socio-demographic questionnaire were used to assess the elderly participants. Data were analyzed using the SPSS. According to the results, all the participants were functionally independent for the performance of the studied activities. Data also showed that functional independence promotes greater integration of elderly individuals within the community, through strengthening social and family bonds, friendship and leisure, factors considered to be determinants of an active aging process. ENVELHECIMENTO ATIVO E SUA RELAÇÃO COM ENVEJECIMIENTO ACTIVO Y SU RELACIÓN CON LA INDEPENDENCIA FUNCIONAL RESUMEN:El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar los factores determinantes del envejecimiento activo y su relación con la independencia funcional. La investigación se realizó con 100 personas mayores de una Unidad de Salud de la Familia, en João Pessoa-PB, Brasil. Como instrumentos para la evaluación de personas mayores se utilizó la Medida de Independencia Funcional y un cuestionario sociodemográfico. Los datos fueron analizados a través del software SPSS. Según los resultados, todos los sujetos presentan la independencia funcional para llevar a cabo las actividades analizadas. Los datos también demostraron que la independencia funcional promueve una mayor integración de las personas mayores en la comunidad, mediante el fortalecimiento de los lazos sociales y familiares, de amistad y de ocio, y esos factores se consideran como determinantes del envejecimiento activo.DESCRIPTORES: Envejecimiento activo. This study aimed to evaluate depression and its relationship with functional capacity in the elderly living in long-stay institutions for the Elderly (ILPIs) of Maceió / AL. This was a correlative and comparative study among the participants, which consider the variables: criterion (depression) and background (functional capacity and indicators). 103 seniors attended eight ILPIs, 48 (46.6%) men and 55 (53.4%) women aged 60 up to 101 years (M = 76.2, SD = 10.1). Participants answered questions about: (1) Geriatric Depression Scale Yesavage, long version, (2) and Katz Index; (3) socio-demographic questionnaire. There were r Pearson correlation analysis and linear regression. It was found that 65% of the elderly had depressive symptoms and 56.4% had dependency related to functional capacity, with greater decline in women. It refers also that functional capacity was presented as a predictor of depressive symptoms and revealed a high incidence of these, in addition to functional disability in institutionalized elderly, pointing functional limitations as an indicator of depressive symptoms in these. RESUMOObjetivos: Caracterizar idosos do Centro-Dia Geriátrico de Rio Claro (SP) de acordo com os sintomas depressivos e o prejuízo funcional e, ainda, verificar a relação entre sintomas depressivos e desempenho nas atividades instrumentais da vida diária. Métodos: Estudo descritivo, transversal, do qual participaram 36 idosos. Os instrumentos utilizados foram: anamnese, Escala Geriátrica de Depressão e Questionário de Atividades Instrumentais de Pfeffer. A análise dos dados ocorreu por meio da estatística descritiva e dos testes U de Mann-Whi tney e correlação de Spearman, com nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: Houve maior presença de mulheres na amostra, que apresentou em média 77,02 anos de idade e 3,44 anos de estudo. A prevalência de sintomas depressivos e prejuízo funcional foi de 30,5% e 63,8%, respectivamente, sendo maior entre as mulheres. Não houve diferença significativa entre as variáveis analisadas em comparação aos gêneros e às faixas etárias. O teste de correlação de Spearman apresentou rho = 0,38 e p = 0,02, indicando correlação positiva, porém fraca, entre sintomas depressivos e prejuízo funcional. Conclusão: Conclui-se que há uma baixa relação entre as variáveis sintomas depressivos e prejuízo funcional, sendo necessários novos estudos para investigar outros fatores que podem estar relacionados a essas variáveis.
