This study aimed to evaluate depression and its relationship with functional capacity in the elderly living in long-stay institutions for the Elderly (ILPIs) of Maceió / AL. This was a correlative and comparative study among the participants, which consider the variables: criterion (depression) and background (functional capacity and indicators). 103 seniors attended eight ILPIs, 48 (46.6%) men and 55 (53.4%) women aged 60 up to 101 years (M = 76.2, SD = 10.1). Participants answered questions about: (1) Geriatric Depression Scale Yesavage, long version, (2) and Katz Index; (3) socio-demographic questionnaire. There were r Pearson correlation analysis and linear regression. It was found that 65% of the elderly had depressive symptoms and 56.4% had dependency related to functional capacity, with greater decline in women. It refers also that functional capacity was presented as a predictor of depressive symptoms and revealed a high incidence of these, in addition to functional disability in institutionalized elderly, pointing functional limitations as an indicator of depressive symptoms in these. Objective: to analyze social representations of individuals over 50 years old living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Methods: qualitative study, interviewing 13 individuals living with HIV, attending by a care assistance facility specialized in infectious diseases. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data, which later were analyzed by dialectical hermeneutics, by applying the Social Representations Theory. Results: after significant reports a few empirical categories emerged: the moment when the diagnosis was disclosed and their feelings afterwards, social representation on aging with Human Immunodeficiency Virus and redefining life. Final considerations: the study proved the reality of discrimination against aging people infected with HIV in social interactions as a whole, which requires changes in society’s perceptions of this subject, the HIV-positive people themselves and the health system, making possible the emancipation of the individual living with HIV while aging and having quality of life.
Objetivo: descrever as características da pessoa idosa indicativas da necessidade de cuidados paliativos na Atenção Básica. Método: estudo quantitativo, observacional, descritivo, realizado no domicilio de 55 pessoas idosas atendidas por uma Unidade de Saúde da Família localizada em uma cidade do Nordeste, no período de 7 de Junho a 8 de Julho de 2019. Para a coleta de dados utilizou-se um formulário com questões referentes a características sociodemográficas e de saúde, sendo também aplicadas as escalas de Katz, de Depressão Geriátrica e Mini Exame Mental. Os dados foram analisados pelo SPSS 22.0 e apresentados em tabelas. Resultados: 60% das pessoas idosas eram do sexo feminino, 65.5% analfabetas, 56,4% encontravam-se na faixa etária de 60 a 69 anos, não apresentavam déficit de cognição e nem sintomas depressivos, 76,4% eram independentes para realizar as atividades básicas de vida diária, 67,3% relataram sentir dor, 96,4% afirmaram ter comorbidades, prevalecendo à hipertensão, 21,8% faziam uso de polifarmácia. Conclusão: A presença de comorbidades e dor foram às características indicativas de cuidados paliativos nas pessoas idosas atendidas na atenção básica, indicando que essa população que está em franco crescimento já necessita desses cuidados.
