Analysis of technical efficiency of milk-producing farms in Minas Gerais

Abstract: The objective of this study was to measure the technical and scale efficiencies of milk-producing farms in the state of Minas Gerais, considering different production levels, and also to identify the determining factors of their technical efficiency. The analyses were carried out using both Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and an econometric Tobit model. The data consisted of information collected in 2005 relating to 771 milk-producing farms. The results indicated that most of the farms exhibit technical ineffi… Show more

“…The authors determined that the results show considerable regional differences in the impact of the outputs, input prices, and fixed factors on marginal costs. Gonçalves et al (2008) analyzed technical and scale efficiencies of milk production farms in Minas Gerais region of Brazil, considering different production levels and determined that small farmers have the potential to expand their production and productivity, since they were performing with increasing returns to scale. It was also determined that large farmers presented the best measures of technical efficiency, which was explained by factors such as access to rural credit, training, and technical support.…”

“…Estes autores avaliaram os níveis de eficiência técnica em três sistemas de produção alternativos em Minas Gerais utilizando o modelo de fronteira estocástica de produção. Gonçalves et al (2008), por outro lado, estimaram a eficiência técnica de produtores de leite de Minas Gerais a partir da técnica de Análise Envoltória de Dados. Em ambos os estudos, os determinantes da eficiência técnica foram analisados utilizando-se como base modelos de regressão Tobit.…”

“…The new competitive environment resulting from the transformations in the Brazilian dairy farming, highlighted by authors such as Gomes & Ferreira Filho (2007), Gonçalves et al (2008) and Siqueira et al (2010), boosted the development of the sector. Although the Brazilian dairy farming still has low average productivity, the activity has gradually specialized and, notably, the biggest producers have obtained gains in productivity and efficiency (Alvim et al, 2009).…”

“…Studies of Tupy & Yamaguchi (2002) and Gonçalves et al (2008), who analyzed the technical efficiency of dairy farming, can be interpreted as long-term results, considering that all inputs can be modified. However, this reasoning cannot be applied in the short term, since the level of technology should be considered constant.…”
