Technical performance of milk producers in the state of Goiás , Brazil, in the short and long terms

Abstract: -The objective of this study was to identify groups of technologically homogeneous milk producers in the State of Goiás and calculate the gains for inefficient producers, considering the ones of better performance (benchmarks) with the same technological level, i.e., in the short term, and the benchmarks in higher technological level, i.e., in the long term. Multivariate statistical analysis techniques were used for the formation of homogeneous producer groups and multi-stage model of data envelopment analysis… Show more

“…This TE level is similar to the one found in the study of Sousa et al (2012) (54.5 per cent) that was performed in the Brazilian State of Goiás, considered the fifth highest national producer (8.7 per cent), surpassed by Minas Gerais (26.7 per cent), Paraná (14.1 per cent), Rio Grande do Sul (13.7 per cent) and Santa Catarina (9.3 per cent) in 2011 (IBGE, 2016). Despite TE's somewhat similar levels, the variation in average efficiency between the two studies reflects the reality of different Brazilian regions, different time periods (2009 vs 2010), differences in input and output selections, and differences in sample sizes (500 vs 253 farms).…”

“…Despite TE's somewhat similar levels, the variation in average efficiency between the two studies reflects the reality of different Brazilian regions, different time periods (2009 vs 2010), differences in input and output selections, and differences in sample sizes (500 vs 253 farms). Sousa et al (2012) used two outputs (sale of milk produced and sale of animals), and this study used milk (measured in litres) and bonus. Other differences are that Sousa et al (2012) includes machinery and installations, and this study includes feed as an input.…”

“…A análise mul variada, junto com a análise de efi ciência, já vem sendo u lizada; Sousa et al (2012), estudando o desempenho técnico dos produtores de leite no Estado de Goiás, empregaram a esta s ca mul variada para formação de grupos de produtores e o modelo de análise DEA para a es ma va de escores de efi ciência e iden fi cação de pontos de referência.…”

“…Jataí city in GO is the third larger producer nationally (IBGE 2012). The milk yield in the Brazilian Midwest increased yearly by 5.13% from 1990 to 2010, contributing to a national increase of 3.66% (Sousa et al 2012). Currently, the control standards of Brazilian milk quality have become more stringent in order to avoid health problems for the consumer.…”
