Background: Obesity is a chronic disease and has become the most prevalent public health problem worldwide. The impact of obesity on knee is strong and the BMI is correlated with the different alterations. Aim: Compare surgical visualization of arthroscopic field in partial meniscectomy in obese and non-obese. Method: Sixty patients were selected, 30 obese and 30 non-obese who underwent arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. The arthroscopic surgical procedures were recorded and analyzed. For the analysis of visualization was used the Johnson's classification (2000). Results: Were analyzed 48 men and 12 women, the average age was 42.9 years with BMI between 21.56 to 40.14 kg/m2. The distribution of visibility of the surgical field according to the classification was: grade 1 - 38/60 (63.3%); grade 2 - 13/60 (21.6%); grade 3 - 6/60 (10%); grade 4 - 3/60 (5%). Conclusion: Knee arthroscopy did not show a significant difference in the visibility of arthroscopic field in obese and non-obese patients. Thus, it should not be indicated as the preferred method of diagnostic evaluation of joint changes in these patients.

The natural history of the anterior knee instability by stress radiography

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the anteroposterior displacement of the knee by means of stress radiography in individuals with unilateral anterior knee instability and relate to time of instability. METHODS: Sixty individuals with intact knees (control group) and 125 patients with unilateral anterior instability (AI group) agreed to participate in the study. Gender, age, weight, height, age at injury, time between injury and testing, and surgical findings are studied. Both groups are submitted to anterior and posterior stress radiographies of both knees. Anterior (ADD) and posterior displacement difference (PDD) were calculated between sides. RESULTS: In the control group ADD and PDD are in average, zero, whereas in the AI group ADD averaged 9.8mm and PDD, 1.92mm. Gender, age, weight, height, age at trauma and presence of menisci's lesions do not intervene in the values of ADD and PDD. Meniscal injuries increase with time. ADD and PDD do not relate with the presence or absence of associated menisci's lesions. The ADD and the PDD are related to each other and increase with time. CONCLUSION: There is a permanent anterior subluxation of the injured knee that is related to the amount of anterior displacement that increases with time. O ligamento cruzado anterior (LCA) é frequentemente lesado, podendo ser tratado cirurgicamente em situações como na prática esportiva ou quando há permanência do quadro álgico e situações de instabilidade. Há vários protocolos dispostos em diversos estudos, no entanto nenhum é considerado ideal. Houve grande avanço no setor da reabilitação permitindo que o indivíduo possa retornar de forma segura o mais rápido possível ao esporte ou suas atividades de vida diária (AVD). O objetivo deste estudo é analisar resultados terapêuticos através de técnicas e recursos fisioterapêuticos na recuperação de pós-operatório (PO) em lesão de LCA. Foi realizado um estudo de caso de um paciente com lesão de LCA e submetido à cirurgia. Ao final desse período houve melhora da força muscular, amplitude de movimento (ADM), redução da dor e edema, aumento da massa muscular, retorno ao trabalho e AVD. Foi concluído que a fisioterapia é extremamente eficaz no PO de lesão de LCA. Palavras-chave: ligamento cruzado anterior, pós-operatório, reabilitação.
