Anatomic and physiological modifications in seedlings of Coffea arabica cultivar Siriema under drought conditions

Abstract: Due to the weather changes prognostic for the coming years, the understanding of water deficit and physiological responses of plants to drought becomes an important requirement in order to develop technologies such as mechanisms to assist plants to cope with longer drought periods, which will be essential to maintenance of Brazilian and worldwide production. This study aimed to evaluate ecophysiological and anatomical aspects as well as the nitrate reductase activity in Siriema coffee seedlings subjected to fo… Show more

“…Thickening of cell Copyright © 2020 Universitas Sebelas Maret size aims to improve waterways and water use efficiency. This is in line with the statement of Melo et al (2014), that the increase in cortex thickness is a mechanism to multiply cells in the cortex as an effort to store more water. Cortex thickness is related to the water storage capacity in the root.…”

“…This may have been a strategy used by the plants to lose their leaves during the dry season or during water stress. A similar result was found by Melo et al, (2014) on Coffea arabica seedlings, where nitrate reductase activity was reduced in the leaves under water deficit. Similar results were observed in another study with Açai; results indicated that, nitrate reductase activity was decreased under water deficit conditions (Freitas et al, 2008).…”
