Spatial distribution of water erosion risk in a watershed with eucalyptus and Atlantic Forest

Abstract: The process of water erosion occurs in watersheds throughout the world and it is strongly affected by anthropogenic influences. Thus, the knowledge of these processes is extremely necessary for planning of conservation efforts. This study was performed in an experimental forested watershed in order to predict the average potential annual soil loss by water erosion using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and a Geographic Information System (GIS), and then compared with soil loss tolerance. All the USLE fa… Show more

“…4) at a scale of 1:20,000. This contribution will allow enhanced implementation of soil erosion models based on USLE and/or RUSLE (García-Préchac and Durán, 1999;Clericí and García-Préchac, 2001;Durán and García-Prechac, 2007;Hill et al, 2008) or through the combination of land cover and soil information through a GIS (Kouli et al, 2008;Bulut et al, 2012;Demirci and Karaburun, 2012;Avanzi et al, 2013). This is necessary work for soil erosion prevention through soil conservation policies (Kuhlman et al, 2010), such as those suggested by Prager et al (2011), that Uruguay has implemented at a national scale since 2012 (MGAP, 2012).…”

“…In this sense, Avanzi et al (2013), who analyzed the process of water erosion in an afforested basin, noticed that in areas intended for planting eucalyptus there is evidence of greater levels of soil loss than in areas with Atlantic Forest vegetation, which reinforces the role of native cover in soil conservation.…”
