Effect of plant and fungous metabolites on Meloidogyne exigua

Abstract: As nematodes cause great damage to Brazilian coffee production, effective methods to control these parasites are necessary. In a previous work Allium cepa L., Cajanus cajan (L.) Mill., Crotalaria juncea L., Ficus elastica Roxb., Ruta graveolens L., Stylosanthes guianensis Aubl., Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) Dewit., Brachiaria decumbens Stapf., Catharanthus roseus G. Don, Tagetes minuta L., Ricinus communis L. and Coffea arabica L. produced active substances against Meloidogyne exigua Goeldi, a nematode widely … Show more

“…comm.). In addition, other studies have shown S. guianensis to have a nematicidal effect on another root-knot nematode species, M. exigua, in Brazil (Amaral et al, 2009), and it cannot be excluded that this is also the case for M. graminicola. Therefore, additional studies are needed to evaluate the direct effect of the cover crops.…”

“…The ricinine present in castor pollen can be toxic to social bees ( Apis mellifera L. and Scaptotrigona postica Latreille) (Rother et al, 2009; Assis et al, 2011). When extracts and powders derived from castor leaves were found to suppress parasitic nematode growth, ricinine was thought to be the active compound (Radwan et al, 2007; Amaral et al, 2009; Katooli et al, 2011; Lopes et al, 2011).…”

“…Castor leaves increased the effect of castor meal against M. incognita attacking lentil ( Lens culinaris Medikus) and okra ( Abelmoschus esculentus L.) plants (Wani, 2006). An extract of castor leaves killed 86% of M. exigua juveniles J2 in coffee plants ( Coffea arabica L.) (Amaral et al, 2009). Castor leaf extract was more effective than carbofuran against M. incognita attacking tomato plants (Radwan et al, 2007).…”

“…Trabalhos também relataram que o extrato aquoso é nematicida em plantações de tomate (JUNGES et al, 2009;MATSUMOTO et al, 2002;NACHTIGAL;SCHNEIDER, 2007), porém, há trabalhos que afirmam que este extrato aumenta o número de ovos, tornando assim a planta como hospedeira de nematóide em plantações de café (AMARAL et al, 2009;PONTE et al, 1996). Navarro e Barriga (1970) citaram a planta como resistente aos nematóides.…”
