The present study aimed to describe histological traits of the graft welding process and evaluate the effect of rootstocks on the physical and chemical traits and the productivity of sour passion fruit populations. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design, in a 4x2 + 4 factorial scheme (cultivars / canopy x rootstocks), three replicates and nine plants per plot. Commercial cultivars and populations and Passiflora alata and P. nitida rootstocks, in addition to ungrafted plants were used as canopy. Cleft grafting was the grafting type adopted. Traits analyzed such as productivity and physical and chemical quality of fruits were submitted to analysis of variance and compared by the Tukey test. The canopy morphology was evaluated according to descriptors of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. Grafting was carried out for each graft/rootstock combination for histological analysis. Sections were obtained by freehand cuts, stained and mounted on semi-permanent slides, examined under optical microscope and photomicrographed. Rootstocks affected the early cultivation and reduced productivity and number of fruits of passion fruit populations. Grafting did not affect the quality of fruits or the canopy morphology. Considering the complete culture cycle, P. alata species is able to be used as rootstock. The anatomical study demonstrates the occurrence of better compatibility in the connection of P. edulis tissues on P. alata, compared to grafting on P. nitida.Análise histológica e desempenho de populações de maracujazeiro-azedo sob diferentes porta-enxertos resistentes ao fusarium spp Resumo -O objetivo do presente trabalho foi descrever as características histológicas do processo de soldadura da enxertia e avaliar a influencia dos porta enxertos sobre as características físicas e químicas do fruto e na produtividade de populações de maracujazeiro azedo. O delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, num esquema fatorial 4x2+4 (cultivares/copas x porta enxertos), com três repetições e nove plantas por parcela. Foram utilizadas como copa cultivares comerciais e populações e os porta enxertos Passiflora alata e P. nitida, além do pé-franco. O tipo de enxertia foi o convencional por garfagem no topo em fenda cheia. As características analisadas como produtividade e qualidade físico química dos frutos foram submetidas à análise de variância e comparadas pelo teste de Tukey. E a morfologia da copa foi avaliada de acordo com descritores do MAPA. Foi realizada a técnica de enxertia de cada combinação enxerto/porta enxerto para a analise histológica, onde as secções foram obtidas à cortes a mão livre, coradas e montadas em lâminas semipermanente e analisadas sob microscópio óptico e fotomicrografadas. Os portas enxertos influenciaram no período inicial de cultivo reduzindo a produtividade e o número de frutos das populações de maracujazeiro, e a enxertia não influenciou na qualidade dos frutos e na morfologia da copa. The cultivation knowledge about the Cerrado native fruits is incipient. These plants are found in wild conditions and its fruits are obtained through extraction, as the case of araticum (Annona crassiflora Mart.), which is a species with the great economic potential. This plant propagation by grafting, among other methods, has proved problematic. Possible incompatibility causes were investigated using histochemical and anatomical studies. Transverse and longitudinal stems sections were analyzed in the araticum grafting area on rootstocks of araticum-de-terra-fria (Annona emarginata (Schltdl.) H. Rainer "Terra-fria"), biribá (Annona mucosa (Jacq.) Baill), and soursop (Annona muricata L.). Araticum graft survival rate was low with these rootstocks, which seems to be associated with anatomical and histochemical factors. The periderm and pith are more developed in araticum than in the other plants, which affects the alignment and juxtaposition of the cambium and vascular bundles in the graft area, hindering a successful graft. The histochemical reactions for phenolic compounds detection were very strong in cortical parenchyma, pith and xylem fibers of araticum (A. crassiflora). The presence of phenolic compounds is increased depending on the cut for grafting and the formation of these compounds is evidenced as an important limiting factor for successful grafting. It is recommended practices for reducing these compounds and a larger diameter of the graft, as a mean to overcome these anatomical difficulties.

Coffea arabica rootstock resistant to Meloidogyne paranaensis nematodes

Meloidogyne paranaensis is a species of root‐knot nematode that affects coffee (Coffea arabica L.) tree growth by causing severe damages to the plant root. This study evaluated the agronomic performance of Coffea arabica progenies in an M. paranaensis‐infested field and assessed the compatibility of resistant C. arabica genotype 28‐I‐4 (GEN28) as rootstock for susceptible cultivars. Experiment 1: under field conditions, six progenies were analyzed; the controls were ‘IPR100’ as resistant and ‘Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144’ (CtV144) as susceptible. Experiment 2: under greenhouse conditions, combinations of grafts and rootstocks between susceptible CtV144 and GEN28 were evaluated regarding their resistance to M. paranaensis alongside their noninoculated counterparts. For this, M. paranaensis reproduction factor (RF), total population of the nematode per gram of root system, growth parameters, gas exchange, and water potential (ψpd) were evaluated. In Experiment 1, resistant C. arabica progenies were more vigorous, productive, and showed a population of M. paranaensis threefold‐times lower than that observed in roots of susceptible CtV144. Among the resistant progenies selected in the field experiment, GEN28 was chosen for physiological compatibility study with the traditional cultivar CtV144. In Experiment 2, the CtV144 grafted onto GEN28 led to resistance to M. paranaensis, as well as a higher leaf area and ψpd as compared with nongrafted CtV144. Therefore, the GEN28 holds suitable characteristics to be used as a new Coffea arabica rootstock applied to production of resistant seedlings to Meloidogyne paranaensis nematodes. This technology represents an alternative to keep up coffee activity in infested areas.
