Silvopastoral systems can have animal welfare and sustainability benefits because trees continually remove carbon from atmosphere, reducing greenhouse effects. Thisstudy identified the most promising fruit trees for inclusion in silvopastoral systems to dairy cattle calves. This experiment was conducted at EmbrapaAgrossilvipastoril, Brazil, between 2014 and 2018. Five silvopastoral systems with fruit trees and ‘Tifton-85’ grass were designed to evaluate tree growth and light environment under the canopies. Data were analyzed using SAS® and PDIFF (P < 0.10). Caja fruit trees had the greatest tree height (5.4 m) and trunk diameter (23.4 cm), while acerola fruit tree had the smallest (1.8 m and 8.3 cm, respectively). At 42 months (drought 2017), caja, cashew, and guava trees had similar heights. Guava trees had the highest light interception (89.3%), both cashew cultivars provided medium levels of shade (50 to 60% LI) and with greater constancy between the rainy and dry seasons. The systems that showed increased light interception during the drought period were those with CCP76 in 2017 and EMB51 in 2018. Higher incidences of wavelengths of the spectral composition of light occurred between the rainfall (2015) and drought (2017) periods, and greater differences in the ratio of red:far red in 2015. By 2018, there were no more differences between the rainy and dry seasons for the spectral composition of light under the tree canopies. Cashews and guava trees have adequate growth and light environment to support silvopastoral systems but Caja and acerola fruit trees showed limitations.

RESUMO -Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o crescimento vegetativo e a produtividade da bananeira cv. "Nanicão" cultivada sobre coberturas de solo com leguminosas herbáceas perenes no semiárido. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, em esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas no tempo, sendo nas parcelas o fator "A" constituído por três manejos de cobertura do solo, pelas leguminosas cudzu tropical (Calopogonium mucunoides), calopogônio (Pueraria phaseoloides) e solo descoberto (solo capinado), fator "B" nas subparcelas e plantas de bananeiras em três idades morfofisiológicas (diferentes ciclos e tamanhos), e o fator "C" datas das coletas nas subparcelas. O cultivo de bananeira em solo sob cobertura viva com calopogônio e cudzu tropical na região do semiárido promoveu aumento no número e peso do fruto, pencas e cachos.Palavras-chave: Adubação verde. PERFORMANCE OF BANANA "Nanicão" ON LIVE COVERAGE OF SOIL IN SEMIARIDABSTRACT-This work aimed to evaluate the growth and yield of banana cv. "Nanicão", in intercropping with live coverage crops in the semi-arid region. The experiment was analysed as a randomized complete block with four replications. The experiment used a split-plot design, and some variables were sub-subdivided over time. In the plots, factor "A", made of three management strategies of soil cover -the leguminous, calopo and tropical kudzu, and bare soil (hoed soil); Factor "B", on the sub-plots, banana plants in three morphophysiological ages (different cycles and sizes) and factor "C", dates of collections in the sub-plots. The cultivation of banana cv. Nanicão in soil under live coverage with calopo and tropical kudzu in the semi-arid region promotes an increase in the number of fruits, fruit weight and bunches.

RESUMOO emprego de plantas de cobertura em consórcio com bananeiras pode ser uma estratégia de manejo, possibilitando aumentos de produtividade associados à otimização de processos biológicos e maior estabilidade do sistema produtivo. Neste trabalho, objetivo-se avaliar o efeito da cobertura viva, formada por leguminosas herbáceas perenes sobre a produção de bananeira cultivar Nanicão. Os tratamentos foram: amendoim forrageiro (Arachis pintoi Krap. & Greg), cudzu tropical (Pueraria phaseoloides Benth.), siratro (Macroptilium atropurpureum Urb.), vegetação espontânea (dominada por Panicum maximum Jacq.) e vegetação espontânea + N-fertilizante. Foi avaliado o desenvolvimento vegetativo das bananeiras entre abril/1999 e julho/2000 e os atributos de produtividade. O peso do cacho e da penca foram positivamente influenciados pelo siratro e cudzu tropical empregados como coberturas vivas, quando comparados aos demais tratamentos. Todas as leguminosas proporcionaram maior crescimento das bananeiras (notadamente a partir do 6º mês), maior número de folhas emitidas e maior proporção de cachos colhidos, em relação aos tratamentos com vegetação espontânea (com e sem N-fertilizante). As leguminosas siratro e cudzu tropical promoveram condições adequadas ao desenvolvimento das bananeiras, acarretando ganhos de produtividade e eliminação da adubação nitrogenada no bananal. O potencial benéfico das leguminosas cudzu tropical e siratro como coberturas vivas capazes de proporcionar aumentos na produtividade de banana, qualifica essas espécies como alternativa promissora para a fertilidade do solo e nutrição das bananeiras.Termos para indexação: Musa spp., plantas de cobertura, adubação nitrogenada, adubação verde. ABSTRACTThe use of coverage plants in cover cropping with bananas can be a management strategy, increasing in productivity associated with the optimization of biological processes and greater stability of production system. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of live coverage by herbaceous perennial legume on the yield of banana cultivar Nanicão. The treatments were: forage groundnut (Arachis pintoi Krap. & Greg), tropical cudzu (Pueraria phaseoloides Benth.), siratro (Macroptilium atropurpureum Urb.), spontaneous vegetation (mainly Panicum maximum Jacq.) and spontaneous vegetation + N-fertilizer. Banana plant vegetative development and yield attributes between April/1999 and August/2000 were assessed. In comparison to other treatments, bunch and hand weight were more positively influenced by tropical cudzu and siratro legumes employed as live coverage. All legumes promoted higher vegetative growth for banana plants (notably from the 6th month on), a greater number of leaves, and a higher proportion of harvested bunches in relation to spontaneous vegetation (with and without N-fertilizer). Siratro and tropical cudzu legumes promoted adequate conditions for the development of the banana plants, generating yield gains, and the elimination of the need of nitrogenous fertilization in the banana plantation...
