Changes in fauna and abiotic factors in estuaries are a consequence of their exploitation; thus, bivalve mollusks, as they filter, are widely used as environmental bioindicators. The aim of this study was to analyze the existence of seasonal variation in the concentration of total coliforms (TC) and thermotolerant coliforms (Ct), in addition to correlating the data obtained with the salinity and temperature in collection areas of Mytella falcata and the soft tissue cultivated in the Estuarine Complex of Cananéia. Two biweekly samples of water and tissue were taken, for 12 consecutive months, in nine cultivation areas of M. falcata. The analysis of the water samples showed that the Fisheries Institute, Mosquiteiro, and Itapitangui have high TC densities, with respective annual averages of 772.22, 592.67, and 563.75 most probable number (MPN).100 ml−1. The highest concentrations of TC and Ct occurred in the summer, in most areas. There was a decrease in both TC and Ct with increasing salinity. However, there was an increase in Ct with increasing temperature. The soft tissue showed TC densities from 9 to 26 MPN.100 ml−1 and Ct densities from 6 to 14 MPN.100 ml−1, displaying the highest counts in the summer. Places where coliforms were found in high concentrations could indicate contamination, because Ct do not support higher salinities for a long time. Practitioner Points The general mean was 77.64 (total coliforms) and 39.35 (thermotolerant) MPN.100 ml−1. Annual average (thermotolerant) exceeded the permitted Brazilian limit in five points. Higher concentrations of total and thermotolerant coliforms occurred in the summer. In mollusk's tissue, concentrations of thermotolerant were 6.30 to 26.16 MPN.100 g−1. Coliforms' MPN varied with increasing salinity and temperature.

Urban drainage systems can represent sources of pollutants input to the receiving bodies for which they are intended. Therefore, the present work aims to propose a tool for modeling the urban drainage system of the Vertente Marítima basin of Fortaleza, Ceará, aiming at the evaluation of bacteriological loads. For this purpose, the Stormwater Management Model (SWMM) was selected for the hydrological and hydraulic simulations; a methodology for the calculation of bacteriological loads was proposed by estimating the diffuse load [DL] (MPN, day -1 .ha -1 ) and its correlation with a series of hydro-environmental variables and scenarios for different pluviometry precipitation conditions were analyzed, as well as sewage collection and inadequately disposed solid waste (IDSW). The resultsshow that SWMM gives representative results and that the rainy season is responsible for the greater contribution of the bacteriological load to the seafront. Regarding the predictive model, a second-order potential function was adjusted by correlating DL with the average monthly precipitation (mm. day -1 ) for the three sub-basins analyzed. Subsequently, the coefficients of the equations found were correlated to IDSW (kg.day -1 ), obtaining a logarithmic adjustment (R 2 = 0.99), with which it is possible to obtain a DL estimation equation for any sub-basin of Vertente Marítima. An analysis of the scenarios showed a significant increase of the load in extreme precipitations (twice) and a considerable decrease with the increase of the fraction of the population connected to the sewage network and the decrease of IDSW production (0.28 and 0.38 times the initial value in the Jacarecanga and Maceió Stream, respectively).

Thin layers are vertically compressed, horizontally extensive, highly concentrated features comprised of plankton and/or particles. They are critical components of the marine ecosystem, likely playing a key role in the life histories and evolutionary trajectories of species found in, or, interacting with them. These structures have been reported in diverse marine environments around the globe. However, the mechanisms of thin layer formation/dissipation in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean were unknown until this contribution. To assess the temporal evolution of thin phytoplankton layers on the inner shelf off Ubatuba, Brazil, we conducted two oceanographic fixed station cruises, including optics, acoustics, and imaging techniques. Over a period of 2 days, three thin layers were observed: within the pycnocline close to the maximum stratification, and below the pycnocline where phytoplankton were affected by enhanced nutrient supply provided by the South Atlantic Central Water (SACW). Changes in regional wind patterns influenced the presence of SACW, which directly affected shear and stratification: the primary physical mechanisms we attribute to thin layer formation in this region. The associated biological mechanisms contributing to thin layer formation were biomass accumulation (in situ growth) and likely the mobility of dinoflagellates. The dominant organisms in the thin layer depths and surroundings, by our in situ imaging system, were cyanobacteria, diatoms, dinoflagellates, and crustaceans. Thin Layers likely have crucial importance for meso‐oligotrophic environments, representing important feeding resources for higher trophic levels.
