A time series of chlorophyll a and in situ primary production sampled over a period of 33 days during summer in Ubatuba region, southeastem Brazil, was subjected to multivariate and harmonic analysis. Principal Component Analysis has revealed four factors interpreted as (i) South Atlantic Central Water forcing; (ii) Transient ftontal systems and rain fali forcings; (iii) Wind forcing normal to the coast; (iv) Wind forcing parallel to the coast, as main factors in the variability of the phytoplankton biomass and primary productivity. Splitting of the time series according to four main events which had profound effects on the physicochemical characteristics of the region showed the following variations in the primary productivity integrated over the photic layer (g C m-2 day-1): mixing→stratification period, 0.40 ± 0.11; heavy rainfall, 1.24± 0.28; stratification after rainfall, 0.74± 0.10; stratification→mixing period, 0.90± 0.27; stratification after deep mixing, 0.63 ± 0.28. Harmonic analysis revealed two indistinguishable significant peaks of the phytoplankton biomass - one at a period of 8.25 days and one at a period of 6.6 days, contributing, respectively, about 17 and 32% ofthe total variance. Atmospheric forcing showed a characteristic period,of 200-264 hours while phytoplankton biomass response ranged over the 144-192 hours time scales and primary productivity was best related to the environment 360 hours before. Relative to total nitrogen' and ' biomass primary productivity oscillations were lagged about 96-144 hours. The interruption of steady-state conditions by transient atmospheric ev~nts and wind field intensification are the determining factors driving phytoplankton changes in this coastal environment.

RESUMOA praia de Carne de Vaca, está localizada no litoral norte do Estado de Pernambuco, entre as coordenadas 7°34'40" e 7°34'57" Lat. S, 34°52'38" e 34°52'34" Long. W, Goiana -Pernambuco, Brasil. Com o objetivo de quantificar a biomassa fitoplanctônica (clorofila a) e correlacioná-la com os parâmetros hidrológicos e climáticos foram coletadas amostras bimestralmente na superfície da água, nos regimes de baixa -mar e preamar de um mesmo dia, no período de fevereiro a dezembro de 1998 em duas estações delimitadas para o estudo. A coleta das amostras de oxigênio dissolvido e demanda bioquímica do oxigênio (DBO) foram efetuadas com garrafa oceanográfica de Nansen e as amostras de salinidade, pH, nutrientes (nitrato, nitrito, fosfato e silicato), foram feitas com garrafas plásticas. As amostras para o estudo da biomassa (clorofila a) foram filtradas por um sistema de filtração da marca Millipore e a determinação da clorofila a foi realizada pela análise espectrofotométrica. Os parâmetros climatológicos apresentaram um nítido ciclo sazonal e os hidrológicos não apresentaram um padrão de distribuição. Os teores de biomassa (clorofila a) variaram de 0,75 a 18,94mg.m -3 e não houve grandes diferenças nas estações de coletas, embora, revelando-se ligeiramente mais elevados na estação 1. Considerando-se os teores de clorofila a, pode-se classificar a praia de Carne de Vaca como um ambiente eutrófico, apresentando regime de salinidade variando de eualino a polialino. A estação 1, é condicionada às influências dos rios da região, apresentando níveis mais elevados de fertilidade da água e a estação 2, recebe influência de um pequeno aporte de água doce que sustenta um manguezal localizado adjacente a esta estação. Abstract: In an oligotrophic coastal zone, land drainage and atmospheric precipitation can temporarily modify the concentrations of specific dissolved compounds in local surface waters, mainly nutrient salts, setting up conditions for "new" primary production of phytoplankton. The Ubatuba region (23°30'S -45°06'W) is considered an oligo-mesotrophic region subject to a high average annual precipitation (-2,000 mm). The small rivers flowing into Palmas' Inlet present outtlow patterns linked to the precipitation cycle. Rain and river waters show nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, phosphate and silicate concentrations that are very variable often higher than in surface seawater. When one considers the total nutrient inventory ofPalmas' Inlet (total volume) in each sampling period, the relative contribution of nutrients from rain water presents the following seasonal variations: DIN ( in the~ring of 1991, the average value (all depths) ofprimary production was significant (7.00 mgC m-3 h-). The atmospheric source of dissolved nitrogenous compounds is very important to this region on account of the high pluviosity and the fact that this input occurs directly into the surface seawater, and thus to the euphotic zone.. Resumo: Em zonas costeiras oligotróficas, os aportes de compostos dissolvidos via drenagem continental e precipitação atmosférica podem modificar temporariamente as concentrações de certas espécies químicas na água do mar, principalmente os sais nutrientes, fornecendo condições para uma produção primária "nova" do fitoplâncton. A região de Ubatuba (23°30'S -45°06' W) é considerada oligo-mesotrófica e possui uma precipitação anual média alta (-2.000 mm). Os pequenos rios que fluem para a Enseada das Palmas tem suas vazões refletindo os ciclos de precipitação local. As águas dos rios e das chuvas, possuem concentrações de nitrato, nitrito, amônio, fosfato e silicato variáveis, mas freqüentemente maiores que aquelas encontradas nas águas de superficie do mar. Quando consideramos o reservatório total de nutrientes na Enseada das Palmas (volume total), em cada período de amostragem, pode-se verificar que a contribuição relativa da água de chuva, apresentou variações sazonais dentro dos seguinteslimites: NID (0,1-21,0 %), nitrato (0,06 -15,86 %), fosfato (0,01 -2,75%), silicato (0,04 -4,70 %). AfroduçãO primária nesta zona oligotrófica mostra variações sazonais e o maior valor foi 17,83 mgC m-h-I, na primavera de 1992. Enquanto que na primavera de 1991, ocorreu uma fertilização promovida pela intrusão de Água Central do Atlântico Sul (ACAS) verificada pelas características do diagrama T-S (T-14OC e 8-35,50 USP), sendo que neste período, o valor médio da produção primária (considerando todas as profundidades) foi relativamente alto (7,00 mgC m-3 h-I). A atmosfera como fonte de compostos nitrogenados dissolvidos é muito importante para esta região devido à alta pluviosidade e pelo fato deste aporte ser feito diretamente na superfície da água do mar, assim sendo, na zona eufótica.
