Abstract

SYNOPSISWith the pury.'ose of obtaining data which could be useful for complementing invelltigations on estuarine biological oceanography, the authors carried out a survey on lhe distribution and volume of catch produced by fish-traps USl!.d by trf1.ditional fishermen in the lagoon region of Cananéia-Iguape (São Paulo, Brasil), mainly for catching mul/et. As many as 170 fish-traps w.ere initia/ly spotted and mapped in the whole region, some of which are concentrated in particular areas that seem to be points of more frequent pa~e ofmul/et and other fishes, accordinç to the experience and observations ofreJrional fishermen. In consequence ofthe dam recently buüt õ!ithe Valo Grande -an artificial canal coflich fOrrlUrly linked the RibeiraRiver to the lagoan system ofCananéia-Iguape -it is expected that the sea-water circulation within the /çgoon wl1l be intensified, with a consequent increase in the salinity rates ofits waters, which in tum will probably affect the ecological balance of ' 7T1Il!.
