Plankton studies in a mangrove environment III: bacteriological analysis of waters in Cananéia

Abstract: Waters of the mangrove swamp at Cananeia were analysed bacteriologically aiming the determination of the degree of bacterial contamination. Aerobic counts varied significantly by season, tide and station with the highest of 13,000 and the lowest of 21/ml while coliform counts showed significant variation only by station with the highest of 1,600 and the lowest of 3 per ml. Pseudomonas-Achromobacter group comprised the highest percentage of the total flora at the level of around 60%. The biochemical characteris… Show more

“…The few on record are, however, worth mentioning: Watanabe & Kutner (1965) in Cananeia (SP) performed saprophyte and coliform counts and identified some isolated stock; Mesquita (1981) compared total numbers of free bacteria to those adhering to particules and their relation with abiotic factors in surface waters of the referred estuaries; Abreu et al (1992) studied the interrelation between free and attached bacteria, phytoplankton, heterotrophic flagellates, ciliates, and physicalchemical alterations in an annual.cycle at Lagoa dos Patos estuary (RS). Kolm & Correa (1994) analysed the spatial and temporal variation of saprophytes in sediments of a sandy beach at Pontal do Sul (PR), near the entrance of the estuary of Paranagui Bay.…”
