“…The opposite values, registered in the interior of the bay, characterized a typicall estuarine environment. Kolm & Absher (1995) described an annual variation in the number of halophilic and halophobic bacteria in superficial waters of Paranaguá Bay and found an inverse relationship between the salinity and pH and the number of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria that could be cultivated with the formation of a gradient between the internal and external part of the bay. The present research confirmed the presence of a gradient with greatest values not only of halophobic bacteria, but also of total heterotrophic bacteria and of bacterial biomass in the internal section of the bay (Figs.…”

“…The samples used for the quantification of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria (halophobic and halophilic) and coliforms were transported to the laboratory in ice. The counts of the bacteria were made using the methodology d escribed by Kolm & Corrêa (1994) and Kolm & Absher (1995). The culture medium used was ZoBell 2216E, modified by Gunkel (1964).…”

“…They contribute to the structure and dynamics of the aquatic food webs and biogeochemical cycles. Increases on heterotrophic bacteria numbers can be used to monitor increases in the environmental organic pollution (13). Accurate determinations of bacterial numbers and its fluctuations are needed to evaluate more precisely the changes in the community after discharges of pollutants and coastal run-offs.…”

“…The abundance and distribution of heterotrophic bacteria on marine sandy beaches have been documented in many parts of the world (Brown and McLachlan 1990, Kolm and Correa 1994, Olańczuk -Neyman and Jankowska 1998, Podgórska et al 2008. However studies regarding the role of heterotrophic bacteria in the degradation processes of organic matter accumulated in marine beaches are very rare (Podgórska and Mudryk 2003) and our understanding of these problems is still incomplete and fragmentary.…”
