Las degradation in a fluidized bed reactor and phylogenetic characterization of the biofilm

Abstract: -A fluidized bed reactor was used to study the degradation of the surfactant linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS). The reactor was inoculated with anaerobic sludge and was fed with a synthetic substrate supplemented with LAS in increasing concentrations (8.2 to 45.8 mg l -1 ). The removal efficiency of 93% was obtained after 270 days of operation. Subsequently, 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the sample at the last stage of the reactor operation recovered 105 clones belonging to the domain… Show more

“…This is similar to the results of bacterial communities in soil (Roesch et al, 2007) and sewage (McLellan et al, 2010). This phylum represented a noteworthy portion in studies of LAS degradation (Oliveira et al, 2013;Delforno et al, 2012), those studies used sodium Table 1 Operating stages of the fluidized bed reactor for laundry wastewater treatment.…”

“…LAS degradation in laundry wastewater has been studied in many effluent treatment systems namely fluidized bed reactor -FBR (Oliveira et al, 2013), membrane bioreactor (Jefferson, 2000), expanded granular sludge bed and wetlands (Otterpohl et al, 2003). The FBR has also been applied for the pyrophosphate during DNA synthesis (Ronaghi, 2001), and is able to perform around 400,000 simultaneous reactions (Hudson, 2008) and the advantages of this method over the Sanger method regards to accuracy, flexibility, parallel processing, and simplicity (Gharizadeh et al, 2002), which are a suitable tools for studying microbial ecology.…”

“…Interestingly, the highest percentage of the genera representative of Rhodocyclaceae in stage III was related to greater LAS removal (72.9 ± 18.8 %). In addition, the Rhodocyclaceae family has been observed in other anaerobic reactors in the context of LAS degradation [4,36,37].…”
