Heat transfer studies in a spiral plate heat exchanger for water: palm oil two phase system

Abstract: -Experimental studies were conducted in a spiral plate heat exchanger with hot water as the service fluid and the two-phase system of water -palm oil in different mass fractions and flow rates as the cold process fluid. The two phase heat transfer coefficients were correlated with Reynolds numbers (Re) in the form h = a Re m , adopting an approach available in literature for two phase fluid flow. The heat transfer coefficients were also related to the mass fraction of palm oil for identical Reynolds numbers. T… Show more

“…In some preliminary work, we studied heat transfer to dodecane-water mixtures (Ramachandran et al, 2006), palm oil-water mixtures (Ramachandran et al, 2008), nitrobenzene-water mixtures (Sathiyan et al, 2010) and diesel-water mixtures (Sathiyan et al, 2011) in spiral plate heat exchangers. Extending these studies, in this work, experiments have been conducted in a spiral plate heat exchanger with hot water as the hot fluid and immiscible two-phase mixtures of water and octane, kerosene and dodecane (any one) in different ratios and flow rates as the cold fluid.…”

“…The data for pure fluid (diesel or water) was fitted to Equation (5) by regression analysis and the resultant constants a and m for diesel and water are given in Table 1. Initially the L-M parameter correlation was used for predicting the pressure drop of gas-liquid two-phase systems and then the heat transfer coefficients for liquid-liquid two-phase flow were related to the L-M parameter (Ramachandran et al, 2006(Ramachandran et al, , 2008 in Equation (17), where 'm' represents the power to which the Reynolds number is raised to determine the single phase heat transfer coefficient. The inlet and outlet temperatures of the shell side and tube side fluid are shown in Table 2 for different compositions.…”

“…Ramachandran et al (2006) conducted two-phase experiments in a compact heat exchanger and developed heat transfer correlations for two-phase heat transfer involving liquid-liquid systems. Ramachandran et al (2008) developed a model for predicting the two-phase heat transfer coefficient of liquid-liquid systems using single phase data.…”

“…Saravanan and Rajavel investigated convective heat transfer coefficients of SPHE experimentally and proposed Nusselt number correlation. Ramachandran et al performed experimental investigations on a SPHEs and formulated two‐phase heat transfer coefficient correlations. Sathiyan et al experimentally analyzed SPHE by employing different flow rates and mass fractions of nitrobenzene‐water and a new Nusselt number correlation for two‐phase flows is developed.…”
