A geopolítica simbólica da sífilis: um ensaio de antropologia histórica

Abstract: The article analyzes certain scientific ideas that Brazilian physicians, and particularly syphilologists, have held about this disease. During the 1920's especially, these specialists constructed a uniquely Brazilian version of the disease as they debated with foreign specialists on the origins, symptoms, and incidence of syphilis in Brazil. In their formulations, syphilis became a kind of natural symbol through which they expressed their desires to play a leading role within the international scientific commu… Show more

“…Brazil's normative and policy commitments do seem to have motivated health officials to ensure that other nations enjoy the same rights, shaping Brazil's foreign policy strategies in relation to access to ARVs and other medications (Russo and Shankland 2013). The Brazilian government sees its commitment to health not only as contributing to its own development but also enhancing its international reputation (Carrara 1996). It wants to be identified with the struggle for health as a human right (Nunn et al 2009) and to assert regional leadership (Burges 2006), including in health, through its major role in the newly created Union of South-American Nations (Almeida et al 2010).…”

“…In a historical background about yaws in Brazil, Guimarães (1953) mentioned that possibly the disease was brought to Brazil by the African slaves sent to the country directly from Africa, after 1538. Until 1905, yaws and syphilis had their identities confused, when Castelani identified the agent of yaws, morphologically very similar with Treponemma pallidum, the agent of syphilis (Carrara 1997 …”

“…Through their participation in international and domestic conferences, as well as increased awareness through local advocacy and collaboration with churches and philanthropic organizations, such as the Rockefeller Foundation and the Red Cross, their legitimacy and influence increased (Filho 2001;Nascimento 1991;Carrara 1996;Gómez 2008). In addition to their interest in increasing Brazil's reputation as a nation capable of eradicating disease (Carrara 1997;Peard 1999;Nascimento 1991;Filho 2001), these movements were also closely aligned with the international community's preferences -especially in Western Europe -to expand centralized administration and to provide health services for all (Carrara 1996;Nascimento 1991). To that end, they were unwaveringly dedicated to pressing the government for aggressive prevention campaigns and policy treatment (Carrara 1996;Nascimento 1991;Araujo 1939;Filho 2001), while combating discrimination and racism associated with these diseases (Carrara 1996).…”
