Insufficient attention has been paid to how subway cabins are used by passengers and especially the distribution of passengers and occupancy of facilities. In this study, passengers were observed in 133 sections from the beginning to the end of the early peak of Chengdu Metro in the working days. The differences in occupancy behaviors of passengers to different areas, seats, and standing auxiliary facilities in the cabin were analyzed by the nonparametric test. The occupancy curve was fitted by the least square method from the minimum to the maximum load factor, and the prediction and explanatory model for the use of cabin was established. As expected, the distribution of passengers in the cabin is uneven. The highest occupancy rate has been maintained at the cabin end. Female passengers accounted for the largest proportion in the door area, while male passengers accounted for a larger proportion at the end of the cabin. There is no difference in the use of different seat types by passengers. There are more seats in female passengers, and females are more likely to get the remaining seats when the seat load is nearly saturated. For the auxiliary standing facilities, there are always passengers who do not use the facilities and the proportion is increasing. The facilities that can be relied on account for a greater median proportion of the passengers with facilities, but service capacity is limited. In response to these conclusions, measures to improve the design of the cabin are proposed.

This study investigated the impact of subway car interior design on passenger evacuation and boarding/alighting efficiency. The usability of pedestrian agent models was verified through real-life experiments. A seven-factor orthogonal simulation experiment was designed, using key geometric features of the subway car interior as variables. The results of the computer simulation showed that the impact of subway car interior design factors on evacuation and boarding/alighting time was not entirely consistent, with seat layout and door width being the most important factors affecting passenger movement. In the evacuation scenario, only the connectivity of the subway car has no effect on evacuation time, while in the boarding and alighting scenario, seat layout, car type, door width, and foyer width all significantly affect boarding and alighting time. Multivariate regression models were established to predict evacuation and boarding/alighting times through design features, which can explain 86.7% and 58.9% of the time variation, respectively. The research results were used to guide subway car design, and the proposed new scheme demonstrated better performance.

Resumo: O artigo mostra a fundamentação teórica sobre modelos de diversas fidelidades como ferramentas de teste e avaliação no processo de design iterativo. O trabalho também apresenta uma descrição dos tipos de modelos utilizados no design de produto, as vantagens do uso para a equipe de projeto e as informações que podem ser coletadas para o aperfeiçoamento dos projetos. Finalmente é mostrado um exemplo prático de construção de um modelo de baixa fidelidade de um veículo ultra compacto utilizando novas tecnologias. Dessa forma, o artigo defende o uso da prototipagem ao longo do processo projetual como fornecedor de insights para o designer.Palavras-chave: Design iterativo, prototipagem, design de produto.Abstract: This paper illustrates the theoretical background about several level of models, as testing and evaluation tools during iterative design processes. This work also presents a description of different kinds of models, common used in product design, their advantages for the design team and the information that can be collected aiming project improvement. Finally, a practical example of the construction of an ultra impact vehicle model, using new technologies is shown. Thus, this paper endorses the use of rapid prototyping tools throughout the design process as an insight giver to the designer.
