INTRODUcTIONProstate cancer is the most common form of noncutaneous cancer in men and the second leading cause of male cancer mortality. The incidence of prostate cancer varies according to racial/ethnic differences in several countries (1). The estimated incidence of prosBackground: Black men have a higher incidence of prostate cancer compared with White men in several countries. In Brazil, most studies reported a similar prevalence of prostate cancer between Blacks and Whites as a result of the high race mixture of the population. Objective: To perform a systematic review with meta-analysis of the prevalence of prostate cancer in Black versus White, Brown versus White, and Black versus Brown Brazilian men. Design, Setting, and Participants: This systematic review included cohort, cross sectional and case-control studies comparing the prevalence of prostate cancer between races in Brazil. It was performed using an electronic search of references in bibliographic databases, and dissertations and theses databases from several Brazilian hospitals, universities, and schools of medicine. Meta-analysis was conducted using the RevMan software from the Cochrane Collaboration. To control for potential confounding variables, sensitivity analyses excluding case-control and cross sectional studies were performed. Measurements: The outcomes of interest included the number of participants, prevalence of prostate cancer, and odds ratio of cancer between Black and White men, Brown and White men, and Black and Brown men. Results and Limitations: : Twelve studies approaching the prevalence of prostate cancer in Black or Brown vs. White men in Brazil were identifi ed, totalizing 41388 participants. The prevalence of prostate cancer was 9.6% in Black vs. 5.6% in White men (OR 1.58), 10.1% in Black vs. 6.7% in Brown men (OR 1.43), and 6.7% in Brown vs. 6.6% in White men (OR 1.14). Limitations of this review refl ect the complexity and ambiguity in the defi nition of who is Black and who is not in such an heterogeneous population like the Brazilian people. Conclusions: This systematic review with meta-analysis demonstrates a higher prevalence of prostate cancer in Black men compared to White or Brown Brazilian men. The prevalence of prostate cancer is similar in Brown versus White men.

Methodology: it was conducted a search in the database of the PUBMED with the descriptors epidemiology, prostate, cancer. We selected articles published from 2002 to 2007. It was used as a criterion for exclusion searches that are not directly addressing the incidence of prostate cancer in the population. They were collected the following variables: author(s), year, purpose, methodology and conclusions. Results: 10 articles were reported. Conclusions: it was possible to verify that in the world, the distribution of prostate cancer varies with ethnicity, genetic susceptibility and environmental factors such as diet. With regard to ethnicity, black men have greater susceptibility to tumor that white men of similar age. In the case of genetic, changes in alleles of genes that control the metabolism of androgens influence the incidence of tumor. As for nutrition, research confirms the influence of foods such as meat, fats and oils, ice cream, margarine and vegetable fat. Descriptors: neoplasms; prostate; epidemiology. RESUMO Objetivo: realizar revisão sistemática de literatura sobre a incidência dessa neoplasia no mundo. Metodologia: foi realizada busca na base de dados do PUBMED com os descritores epidemiology, prostate, câncer. Foram selecionados artigos publicados entre 2002 a 2007. Utilizou-se como critério de exclusão, pesquisas que não se tratavam diretamente da incidência do câncer de próstata na população. Foram coletadas as seguintes variáveis: autor(es), ano, objetivo, metodologia e conclusões. Resultados: foram relatados 10 artigos. Conclusões: foi possível verificar que, no mundo, a distribuição do câncer de próstata varia com a etnia, susceptibilidade genética e fatores ambientais, tais como dieta. Com relação à etnia pode-se perceber que homens negros possuem maior susceptibilidade ao tumor que homens brancos de mesma idade. Tratando-se de genética, as variações em alelos de genes que controlam o metabolismo de andrógenos influenciam na incidência do tumor. Quanto à nutrição, pesquisas confirmam a influência de alimentos como: carne, gorduras e óleos, sorvetes, margarina e gordura vegetal. Descritores: neoplasias; próstata; epidemiologia. Prostate cancer is the most common malignancy in men and the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in men of the Western world. Lycopene has received attention because of its expcted potential to prevent cancer. In the present study, we evaluated the influence of lycopene on cell viability, cell cycle, and apoptosis of human prostate cancer cells and benign prostate hyperplastic cells. Using MTT assay, we observed a decrease of cell viability in all cancer cell lines after treatment with lycopene, which decreased the percentage of cells in G0/G1 phase and increased in S and G2/M phases after 96 h of treatment in metastatic prostate cancer cell lineages. Flow citometry analysis of cell cycle revealed lycopene promoted cell cycle arrest in G0/G1 phase after 48 and 96 h of treatment in a primary cancer cell line. Using real time PCR assay, lycopene also induced apoptosis in prostate cancer cells with altered gene expression of Bax and Bcl-2. No effect was observed in benign prostate hyperplasia cells. These results suggest an effect of lycopene on activity of human prostate cancer cells.
