ObstractThis article evaluates the efficiency of the degradation of pollutants present in water from the purification of biodiesel, characterized by high content of chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), oils and greases, methanol, soap, and glycerol. The treatment process proposed was of the photo-Fenton type using iron immobilized in chitosan. The characterization of the material was performed according to degree of deacetylation (DD) and thermal stability (TG). The results revealed a DD of 66.5% and that the material undergoes decomposition in three temperature stages: 100; 150-350 and above 350 °C. The evaluated parameters were: COD, suspended solids, oils and greases, color and turbidity. After a 180-minutes long treatment, the removal percentage was 94.52, 70, 55, and 60% respectively. These results indicate that the photo-Fenton process can be an alternative for pre-treatment this type of effluent.

ResumoA indústria de papel e celulose produz elevado volume de efluente, o qual geralmente apresenta alto valor de cor e concentração de matéria orgânica. A maioria dos componentes presentes no efluente são difíceis de eliminar por processos convencionais de tratamento de águas residuárias. Neste contexto, estudos de alternativas que melhorem significativamente a qualidade do efluente e que representem minimização dos impactos associados à disposição deste no ambiente são necessários. Dentre tais alternativas, destacam-se os Processos Oxidativos Avançados (POA) por serem processos destrutivos e não seletivos de poluentes. Dentre os POA, o processo foto Fenton tem merecido atenção devido à elevada eficiência e simplicidade operacional. O presente estudo objetivou avaliar a eficiência do processo foto Fenton utilizando Fe 2+ imobilizado em esferas de quitosana como catalisador, bem como a capacidade de reutilização do material, visando dar polimento ao efluente de uma indústria de papel e celulose. O processo foi realizado em reator fotoquímico de bancada, com 250 mL de efluente, pH=7, 2,0 g de esferas de quitosana com Fe 2+ (EQFe), e 400 mg.L -1 de H 2 O 2 . Os parâmetros avaliados após 90 minutos de tratamento foram: turbidez, cor, DQO e fenóis totais. Os resultados demonstraram que durante 90 minutos de tratamento houve redução de 59,0% da turbidez, 99,6% da cor, 74,9% da DQO e 87,2% de fenóis, utilizando 400 mg.L -1 de H 2 O 2 e 2 g de massa de (EQFe). Nos ensaios realizados, observou-se que o ferro permaneceu sorvido na matriz, o que possibilitou a reutilização das EQFe em seis ciclos, mantendo a eficiência na degradação. Os resultados indicam a potencialidade do emprego do processo foto Fenton na remediação de efluentes de indústrias de papel e celulose. AbstractThe pulp and paper industry produces a high volume of effluents, which usually have high color value and organic matter concentration. Most components of the effluent are difficult to dispose of using conventional wastewater treatment processes. Thus it is necessary to explore alternatives that improve the effluent quality and minimize the environmental impact associated with its disposal. Among these alternatives, the Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) have been highlighted because they are destructive and nonselective processes of pollutant removal. The use of products and byproducts from the agro-industry and forest biorefinery is essential for the development of value-added and low environmental-impact materials. In this study, polyurethanes were prepared using sodium lignosulfonate (NaLS) and castor oil (CO) as reagents and were used to prepare composites reinforced with lignocellulosic fibers, namely, curaua and coir fibers (30 wt %, 3 cm length, and randomly oriented). The SEM images of fractured surfaces of the composites revealed excellent adhesion at the fiber/matrix interface of both coir and curaua composites, which probably resulted from the favorable interactions between polar groups, as well as amid low polarity domains that are present in both the matrix and the reinforcements. The composites exhibited different impact/flexural and strength/flexural moduli (NaLS/CO/Curaua ¼ 465 Jm À1 /44 MPa/2 GPa; NaLS/CO/Coir ¼ 180 Jm À1 /25 MPa/1 GPa). The higher tensile strength/aspect ratio of the curaua fibers (485 MPa/259) compared with that of the coir fibers (120 MPa/130) most likely contributes to the enhanced performance of its composite.
