Abstract: AIM: to assess the clinical evolution of patients hospitalized due to the first episode of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) according to its clinical manifestation. METHODS: data were collected from 234 patients, hospitalized between May 2006 and July 2009 due to the first episode of an ACS, by consulting their medical records. RESULTS: 234 patients were hospitalized, 140 (59.8%) due to Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI). “…Regarding the sociodemographic characteristics such as age and gender, it was found that the average age was of 63 and the majority of the people researched consisted of males (66.2%), which are similar to other studies (Aliti, Linhares, Linch, Ruschel, & Rabelo, 2011;Coelho, Queijo, Andolhe, Gonçalves, & Padilha, 2011;Dessotte, Dantas, Schmidt, & Rossi, 2011;Gil, Dessotte, Schmidt, Rossi, & Dantas, 2012;Mendes, Reis, Menezes, Santos, & Mussi, 2014). However, recent research with cardiac patients has demonstrated the predominance of females, which can be explained by cardiovascular mortality being higher and earlier among men (Armendaris & Monteiro, 2012;Martins et al, 2011).…”

“…In Brazil, CV disease is responsible for 32% of total mortality [4] and is the main cause of death in those older than 40 years [5]. There are also concerns about CV disease developing at younger ages throughout the country [6]. In Colombia, adjusted mortality rates due to ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease are roughly 1.4 to 2 times those in the United States [7].…”
